Molten caramel golds and shimmering coffee browns are reflected in warmly mellowed silver in this modernist Mexican pendant necklace with neck ring. Very Scandinavian in design, necklaces of this type are not very common in the world of vintage Mexican jewelry and I consider myself even luckier to have come upon this exquisite example because it is also a pre-1980 creation...

Deeply carved so as to represent folds in a fancy bow tie the green agate in this big Mexican Deco brooch has beautiful color variation and is pleasantly "soft" to the touch. The substantial stone is generously backed in silver and held in place with sturdy, hand-wrought prongs. Classically Deco, I also find it rather tongue-in-cheek, an elegant "mockery" of the stiffness of "proper attire". The brooch measures 3" wide by 1 1/2" tall and weighs 33.6 grams...

Sergio is another one of Taxco’s “enigmatic” names. Whether a maestro or a retailer is not known nor is their relationship - if any at all - with the other Sergio whose name is signed in script. Over the years of my buying and selling vintage Mexican silver jewelry, I have come upon a few examples of their work - and I loved them all. The modernist articulated necklace I am presenting here, very much in the spirit of Sigi Pineda’s designs, is the epitome of minimalism...

One of my favorite insect designs in the world of vintage Mexican silver jewelry, this “machine age” dragonfly is known as a Los Castillo creation yet here it is signed by a “less celebrated” Taxco maestro. What first attracted me to this creature is its “industrial”, perforated wings that make the dragonfly look more delicate but awe-inspiring at the same time. Carefully hand-crafted and perfectly finished, the brooch is decorated with three polished agate cabochons...

Circa mid-century, this quatrefoil pendant necklace is the work of "JVL". This master silversmith produced work for Antonio Pineda. I have had this exact design cosigned with both "JVL" and the Antonio Pineda crown hallmark. This necklace is not stamped with the Antonio crown hallmark, but the quality and craftsmanship are identical to the Antonio. The pendant is exquisitely hand-wrought, with four thick onyx half moons surrounding a complex silver design...

Sized for a man (yet resizable by a jeweler to fit a woman as well) this vintage Mexican silver and carved amethyst "mask" ring attracted me with its unusual brutalist setting. I don't think I have ever encountered a "mask" in a brutalist ring and I was quite thrilled with the discovery despite the fact that the stone was showing its age and the shank was burdened with a huge blob of solder thanks to somebody's clumsy attempt at resizing...

A vintage mid century modernist pair of screw back earrings in sterling silver and exotic wood by William Spratling. Described as having four curved sterling lines ending in a swirl of exotic wood.

I love the Los Ballesteros family of massive, “dimpled dot” hinged bracelets and I am constantly on the look out for great examples. Wrought in sterling silver and adorned with a big, bezel-set agate cabochon that celebrates all hues of green, this beauty is a variation of the version with amethyst that is also available on my site. The difference in the bracelet at hand is that the “butterfly” motif that showcases the stone has additional “dots” in it that take up some of what would...

Hinged bangle bracelets whether gem- or hard stone-studded, wrought in shadow-box or simply crafted in bold, massive silver are among my favorite designs by the Los Ballesteros workshop. The modernist, generously wide version at hand with its impressed “nested ellipses” and its bezel-set green jaspers is a first one for me. And I am duly excited about it - its sheer magnitufe, its warmly glowing patina, the earthy, rich hues in the stone all come together in the best possible way around a ha...

Impressive in its generous width, with a gorgeous greenish blue turquoise bezel-set in its central station, this early Matilde Poulat silver bracelet is wrought en repoussage in the “Mexico City style“ she came to represent. Malt’s repousse work leaves the journey of the silversmith’s tools on the jewelry created intentionally visible and that for me brings her close to the philosophy of the Arts and Crafts movement. Yet she is also as “Mexican Deco” as anyone could ever be - her pie...

These interesting turquoise and sterling silver earrings were made in Mexico. The clover shape looks like three hearts with a stem, with the turquoise inlay separated by the sterling silver. The back of one of the screwbacks is marked HECHO EN MEXICO 925 (of which only HECHO EN M and 9 are legible). They also have the maker's initials: a curved BEH, of which the H is not fully stamped. These earrings measure 1" x 3/4". The patina is great as are the turquoise colors.

Substantial and quite unusual in its design this modernist Mexican silver bracelet is an Enrique Ledesma creation and it is adorned with two faceted color-change sapphires. The bracelet’s shape reminds me of ancient torques yet here the two ends bypass each other in a tight, determined embrace. I love the way the sterling tube grows in diameter as it progresses to the bracelet’s front where it is abruptly cut at an angle to accept the gemstone in a crown setting. One of Salvador Teran’s original designs that is difficult to find especially in the form of earrings, the “crouching man” is also a favorite of mine. Its rarity makes copies by Salvador's contemporary maestros avidly sought after and I am happy to present here an example by “3m”, a Taxco workshop known for emulating the renowned modernist’s work. Sterling silver, amethyst and strategically applied oxidation combine in this modernist interpretation of an ancient Aztec motif. The ear...

Reddish brown jasper with light, almost invisible striations attracts the eye in this absolutely minimalist necklace and earrings set bearing the signature of Felipe Martinez and his Piedra y Plata workshop. Martinez was one of Taxco’s best lapidaries and the tight settings, the seamless transitions from sterling to stone in the demi at hand more than attest to the level of his craftsmanship. An ode to Mexico’s ancient crafts this “tribal” necklace wrought in sterling silver with bone links and agate beads bears the signature of Reveriano (Reveri) Castillo. Though the Castillos did, on occasion, incorporate Aztec and Maya artifacts and beads in their jewelry, I believe that here the materials used are contemporary to the designer but brought together is such a way as to evoke ancient types of personal adornment. Everything here is hand-made, with the help of the most rudimentar...
