Antique drawing in charcoal on paper of four women who appear to be in surf or sand at water's edge, apparently unsigned, probably European and 19th century. The figures are somewhat heroic, as if survivors. Possibly a preparatory study for a painting, this work's authorship is unknown, but obviously the artist was talented and probably even listed and known. A charcoal drawing of Bellaire, Michigan (northern part of the state), signed at lower right and dated 1936, and titled there "Bellaire, Mich.", (and titled on reverse backing "Evening Landscape" (crossed out, and nearby artist signature also crossed out), by well known Michigan artist CHARLES CULVER (1908-1967). This is a rather early work, created when the artist would have been in only his late 20's...

A whimsical drawing of a young child-like chimpanzee seated in a parlor, evidently enjoying a cocktail, a tea kettle in the foreground suggesting that he is about to partake in other civilized human behavior. The drawing is unsigned. I researched a bit on the net to see if it might be by the artists who created Curious George, (Hans-Augusto Rey(Reyersbach) and Margret Rey), but the obvious lack of resemblance to that most famous cartoon ape indicates that this drawing is not of him...

Original charcoal drawing by Jean Hippolyte Marchand (French, 1883-1940). Initialed JHM l.r. Also with a gallery label verso from Crane Kalman Gallery, 178 Brompton Rd. London, which gives the name of the artist, the title of the work, and the name of the purchaser in 1967. Crane Kalman Gallery handled the estate of the artist and held a number of exhibitions of his work, including a retrospective exhibition in 1967. One of three works by this artist currently available.

Large charcoal on paper drawing of a head, 23" by 19" (35 1/2" by 29 1/2" in oversized framing), signed at lower right "W. NASH" in all capital letters. This appears to be the head of a woman, perhaps Orientalist subject matter. I speculated that this might be a work by the noted Santa Fe, New Mexico modernist artist Willard Nash (1898-1943), but he did not sign like this, so far as I can determine, and the subject matter would be unusual for him...

This is a fine old drawing of an old-style wooden house with porch, an ancient old tree arching over the structure and two tiny figures at left. The drawing on paper, laid on a board, measures 14" by 9 1/2" inside the mat and 19" by 14 1/2" as framed. There does not appear to be a signature anywhere, but considering the quality of the imagery we must conclude that the artist was trained and listed. Found in Riverside, California, with Santa Barbara framer's sticker on the backing...
