A PAIR of detailed ink drawings, one titled "The Cottage", featuring a tidy home in the English countryside, the other a dated 1911 detailed look at a Gothic church's walls and entrance portal. Affixed to the crumbling old backing is a label for "The Cottage", showing it apparently won the "John J. Burnet Prize" for Alex Nicolson, who was evidently a student in "Club No. 129". So Nicolson was evidently a talented young artist...

This is an unframed study in pencil by a noted figure in eastern American art, XANTHUS RUSSELL SMITH (1839-1929). The artist, at age 85, signed it with his distinctive "XS" monogram at lower left, and wrote "Painted in oil this size", and dated it Nov. 29- 1924. The sketchbook paper measures 6 5/8" by 9". It would be interesting to pair this with the oil version, in order to gain insight into the artist's artistic process...

One of dozens of drawings by this artist that I recently acquired, (ask to see others, not shown in my shop) not many with any color, this is a fine image in soft pencil and a little color crayon on paper, the drawing itself 12" by 18 3/4", in an oak frame without mat, signed at lower left by California and Massachusetts listed artist DAISY MARGUERITE HUGHES (1882-1968). A wild crayon and pencil on paper drawing of bizarre abstracted forms that might be described as "organic", the drawing tacked at four corners to a larger board that is itself painted decoratively. The work, 22" by 18" framed, is signed with initials at lower right that could be "BK" and the date is "02". This was found in Southern California. The artist worked a lot of hours to produce this. Both drawing and gold frame are in very good condition.

A nicely executed good-sized pastel drawing, 19" by 23" (24" by 28" framed), the subject a fast-looking high-end sailboat off a coastline, manned by a number of figures. I would estimate the age as circa 1960's or 1970's. Framed behind detail-dulling non-glare glass, which was common during those years. Frame shows wear, drawing is in excellent condition. Signature "Mather" is at lower left.

A 19th century European pencil drawing of a classical male figure seated on a drape, holding a staff and a round object, signed with initials at lower right with what appears as "MLB". There is no other hint as to the identity of the artist. The paper has no watermarks. Measurements are 9 1/2" by 7" inside the mat, 14 7/8" by 11 1/4" in inexpensive modern frame behind non glare glass.

A vintage study in charcoal of an infant on its back, 12" by 15" (16" by 19" framed), signed at lower right with what appears as "H Collins", and dated adjacent Sept. 14, 1953. I do not see a listed name that would correspond with this name or variants of it. The study is artistic, reminiscent of timeless Italian Renaissance drawings. There is age toning of the paper and some lighter, whitish areas at lower left, above the infant's left arm, and at lower right.

This 13-1/2" x 8-1/2" sight size drawing is in shades of brown with white, and it comes in a 17-3/4" x 12-3/4" gold trimmed wood frame. It is signed AUGUSTINE and it is glazed with non-glare glass. It is in excellent original condition with no chips, cracks, foxing, bends, tears, fading, losses, damage or repairs other than a few small scrapes to the finish on the frame and a small shallow crease to the paper. ...

Original pencil figural drawing, 15" by 9" plus a gray mat, unframed, signed at lower right "K. Delaney" and dated there 1979. I do not know who the artist might have been but he or she certainly had a talent as a draftsperson. The condition is generally good save for modest paper browning and there is tape residue on the reverse from clumsy attachment to the mat. Fit a frame on this and you'll have a pleasant, nicely executed drawing.

A modernist line drawing of a man in thin marker or ink, unsigned, the artist unknown, detail of the face especially indicative of the skill of the artist. The work probably dates to about 1970. Size 7 1/2" by 4" inside the mat, and 10 1/4" by 6 3/4" in silvery wood frame. Condition is excellent. Word "Al" written in pencil on reverse side. There are reflections in the images.

One of dozens of drawings by this artist that I recently acquired, (ask to see others, not shown in my shop) this is a sketch in soft pencil on paper, the drawing and frame 10 3/4" by 22", signed at lower right, and dated there '65, by California and Massachusetts listed artist DAISY MARGUERITE HUGHES (1882-1968). Hughes was born and died in Los Angeles but in between she spent much time in the Provincetown art colony on Cape Cod. Hughes exhibited widely (even at the Paris Salons) and was a memb...

A naive ink drawing, possibly by a child, charmingly titled "EXCHANGES", featuring a mounted cowboy on right firing at an Indian with chief's headdress, firing an arrow at the cowboy while crouching behind a protective rock. A cactus at far left and steer skull at right complete the composition. Probably dates to the early to mid 20th century. It is a simple image, but states a message in a rather straightforward manner. Size is 8" by 12" in simple wood framing.

By Los Angeles artist AKOP TASHCHYAN (1949-), this is a 2009 line drawing, 12" by 13" (16 1/4" by 20 1/4" framed), titled by the artist "NUDES". Signed at upper left and again signed by the artist on the reverse board. Tashchyan was born in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia. and came to the United States in the late 1980's. Always talented as a child, his father did not encourage his artistic pursuits. Tashchyan was not able to stifle his creative impulses, however, and the world is the better...

Pastel on paper drawing of two female figures in black, possibly a mother and her daughter, 23 1/2" by 17 1/2", and narrow frame. I do not see a signature or date, though I believe the paper is likely from the 20th century. The drawing has not been properly framed (no mat) so there has been some contact with the glass. Also as the reverse washboard style rippling shows, there has been past moisture exposure which has caused deterioration of the paper's lower inches, and past exposure to a cor...

An original ink drawing of a 19th century sailing ship, signed at lower right and dated 1970/Old Lahaina by artist WILLIAM SELLERS. I have not located much information on the artist, but see that pencil signed prints of some of his imagery were evidently distributed. This is definitely an original work; careful inspection shows his guiding pencil lines. There are some white areas resembling typewriter white-out especially at upper left and in the background that could be gouache placed there ...
