Thinking this was a work by the major artist Martin Johnson Heade, I sent images to Theodore Stebbins, the Heade expert, who said this was not the work of that artist. In a simple wood frame, it measures 10 3/4" by 12 5/8" (sight size 6" by 8"), and is inscribed on the back, "Christmas South Africa, 1977, Gift from Otto Klar, Dec 2nd". In pencil, on buff colored paper, frame and double matting are clearly original, and the drawing appears to be in excellent condition...
