William David Hanna was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on August 31st, 1941. The youngest of twelve children in a working-class home on the city’s North Side, Hanna demonstrated an unusual interest in antiques and historical sites as a child and spent much of his free time sketching. Eager to make his own way in the world and with money scarce at home at the age of eleven Hanna was working long hours after school as a gas station attendant...

A whimsical drawing of a young child-like chimpanzee seated in a parlor, evidently enjoying a cocktail, a tea kettle in the foreground suggesting that he is about to partake in other civilized human behavior. The drawing is unsigned. I researched a bit on the net to see if it might be by the artists who created Curious George, (Hans-Augusto Rey(Reyersbach) and Margret Rey), but the obvious lack of resemblance to that most famous cartoon ape indicates that this drawing is not of him...

This is a fine drawing on heavy paper, the subject a young woman, in mixed media including pencil, red chalk, wash, and some white gouache for highlights, signed at lower right only with conjoined initials that could be "TH" or some variant of that. Below her portrait is a sensitively rendered pencil sketch of a hand and forearm, beautifully drawn...

Sepia ink on paper drawing, 5 3/4" by 3 3/4" inside a red mat opening, 11" by 8 1/2" as framed, signed at lower left and dated there 1864, by listed English woman artist SARAH LOUISA KILPACK (1840-1909). This is a sweet, beautiful little drawing by an artist who seems to have created mostly coastal landscapes in oil, especially along the English Channel or around the Channel Islands of Guernsey and Jersey. This would be an early work created when she would have been in only her mid 20's...

Large charcoal on paper drawing of a head, 23" by 19" (35 1/2" by 29 1/2" in oversized framing), signed at lower right "W. NASH" in all capital letters. This appears to be the head of a woman, perhaps Orientalist subject matter. I speculated that this might be a work by the noted Santa Fe, New Mexico modernist artist Willard Nash (1898-1943), but he did not sign like this, so far as I can determine, and the subject matter would be unusual for him...

A well-drawn pencil scene of the French coast of western Brittany, titled on reverse "Pecheurs a Douarnenez", signed at lower right by living French artist BRUNO DU TERTRE D'ELMARCQ. Douarnenez is one of the scenic towns much favored by artists since the 19th century. When I first saw this work I was reminded of the beach scenes of Eugene Boudin, the famed late 19th century French artist. The tiny figures, sails, and poetry all remind of that French master...

Somewhat reminiscent of Wayne Thiebaud's paintings of California's tangled freeways, this is an ink drawing with touches of white gouache, 8 1/2" by 11" (13 3/4" by 15 3/4" as professionally mounted and framed in a light ashy wood), signed at lower left and dated there "Aug '01"by noted, recently deceased California artist ZOLITA SVERDLOVE (1936-2009). Fine pencil drawing, possibly illustrator art, of a traditional old doorway in New England or elsewhere in the east, 10 1/2" by 7 1/2" inside the mat, 17" by 13 1/2" framed. There are a few listed artists by this name Don Browne (possibly "Browne"----there might be a fainter version underneath) but I don't believe this to be by one of them, though the work is competently executed. The drawing is in clean, fine condition.

Drawing on paper executed in soft pencil, 7" by 8 1/4", essentially unframed (in a protective frame only), the subject an arid desert landscape butte under a crescent moon, the drawing signed at lower left "ARCH SINCLAIR". There is a listing for an Archie Sinclair (1895-), a student of Henry Keller. Sinclair is listed in many reference works. He is said to be associated with Oregon, so, this might be a scene from the dry eastern part of that state. Evidently he worked in the east as well...

Becoming restless in the United States, he traveled to Mexico, where he studied at the Academia de Belles Artes in Guanajauto and the Art Institute in San Miguel de Allende. Robert Henri 1865-1929 As a young man, he studied in Paris, where he identified strongly with the Impressionists, and determined to lead an even more dramatic revolt against American academic art, as reflected by the conservative National Academy of Design. Together with a small team of enthusiastic followers, he pioneered the Ashcan School of American realism, depicting urban life in an uncompromisingly brutalist style. By the time of the Armory Show, America's first large-scale introduction to...

The subject is a boy or young man, possibly a black man, in a small canoe-like boat, deep in the heart of a classic southern cypress swamp, the Spanish Moss hanging form the trees and brush. Scarce and interesting pencil drawing with some white highlights, on heavy paper, 15" by 20", of one of Quebec's most famous sights, "The Falls of Montmorency/Near Quebec". The work is signed at lower left "Blandford 1871" and at lower right it reads "Miss Alice Tiffany". This is a folky, somewhat primitive work, from an early date, of a kind that is rarely seen.
