Robert Henri 1865-1929 As a young man, he studied in Paris, where he identified strongly with the Impressionists, and determined to lead an even more dramatic revolt against American academic art, as reflected by the conservative National Academy of Design. Together with a small team of enthusiastic followers, he pioneered the Ashcan School of American realism, depicting urban life in an uncompromisingly brutalist style...

An antique red chalk European drawing on laid paper, sheet 8 1/4" by 6 3/4" (15 3/4" by 12" in 20th century frame), unsigned, the subject an aristocratic woman formally dressed, with upswept hair of the period. One wonders if this might be Marie Antoinette herself, or someone else who might have been caught up in the 1789 storming of the Bastille and the infamous Reign of Terror. There is a watermark in the old paper. Taped at top edge only...
An ink on paper drawing in striking Surrealism style, signed with initials RM at lower left within the imagery by the noted Mexican muralist, painter and illustrator ROBERTO MONTENEGRO (1887-1968). The subject is a Dali style clock face, a skeletal hand pointing, and other strange almost biomorphic shapes completing the imagery. Written in pencil underneath the mat is "Hora Unica" (which I take to mean 1 o'clock, the bony index finger on that numeral on the clock face)...
Pastel on paper drawing of two female figures in black, possibly a mother and her daughter, 23 1/2" by 17 1/2", and narrow frame. I do not see a signature or date, though I believe the paper is likely from the 20th century. The drawing has not been properly framed (no mat) so there has been some contact with the glass...
A beautifully executed, sensitive set of five study drawings on one sheet of paper, 8 7/8" by 9" (15 3/4" by 14 1/2" in gold metal frame), the work featuring a lonely-looking donkey, titled at lower left "Alistair", dated Sept. 1984 and signed there by the late Scottish woman artist MARYSIA DONALDSON (died 2018). Donaldson captured beautifully her noble subject, who reminds of lonely Eeyore, in his pasture, in the Christopher Robin/Winnie The Pooh stories...

A 19th century European pencil drawing of a classical male figure seated on a drape, holding a staff and a round object, signed with initials at lower right with what appears as "MLB". There is no other hint as to the identity of the artist. The paper has no watermarks. Measurements are 9 1/2" by 7" inside the mat, 14 7/8" by 11 1/4" in inexpensive modern frame behind non glare glass.
An accomplished colored pencil drawing of a watery landscape, the sun reflecting off those waters, 6 1/2" by 4" (17 1/2" by 15" framed), signed in pencil lower left by the noted American artist CHARLES MELVILLE DEWEY (1849-1937). Dewey was born in northwestern New York state between the Adirondacks and Buffalo. Confined to bed as a youngster by a hip injury, he studied art. By the mid 1870's he was studying at the National Academy and shortly thereafter, in Paris with Carolus-Duran, who he as...

A pencil drawing of a young girl at the coast (sailing craft visible in the left background), 14 1/2" by 11 3/4" in thin strip frame), signed at lower right by the noted California impressionist painter JOE DUNCAN GLEASON (1881-1959). The sketch may be a study for a painting. Gleason is known for his landscapes, marine scenes, especially those with sailing ships large and small, and portraits. Born in Watsonville near Monterey, CA and raised in Los Angeles, he received extensive art education...
A watercolor on paper of a castle on the water with a boat and three women walking on the shingle in the foreground, a row boat on the water and the castle in the distance against the sky. John Varley (1778-1842) was an English watercolorist who painted a large quantity of small watercolors including other versions of Conway castle. There are numerous other watercolors that are attributed to him, but probably not by him. This one has luminosity and precision that leads me to think that it is mos...
A group of 18 unframed pencil drawings, all landscape, signed by noted Southern California artist LEONARD SCHEU (1904-1995). The drawings are titled: Bridge Amsterdam; Roman Wall Tower of London 200 AD; Amsterdam; St. Peters, Salzburg; Amsterdam; Old House Schoenwald Germany; Quebec; Bern (Switzerland); Cathedral Door Granada; Victoria (Canada). Evidently, the artist was an avid traveler. The American-looking scenes, featuring imagery of buildings and trees, are untitled, and comprise five of...
A very early woman golfing circa 1910-1920, signs on the lower left Walter Tittle, soft ground etching, 12 x 13 1/2, framed 19 x 21“
Amedeo Modigliani, Livorno, Italy, 1884- 1920. This beautiful Cariatide is oil pencil on tan paper, apprx 16.5"H by 11.5"W, signed upper left " a Paul Modigliani", Verso original Modigliani Studio card, Gallery Bernard card and original Description label. Condition: paper laid on cardboard, edges fraying and some fading. It is likely that this is a drawing used in Modigliani's studio and that the Paul is Paul Alexander
Modigliani’s Physician.
Charcoal on paper, 7 7/8" by 11 3/8" (14 1/4" by 17 7/8" as framed), not signed above the mat (not opened up), but bearing a 1968 label on the reverse from ACA American Master Gallery of La Cienega Blvd. in Los Angeles, providing the name of the artist, with the words below stating "From the estate by K Moskowitz". This is a rather typical subject for the artist, EUGENE HIGGINS (1874-1958), who is today grouped with the Ash Can school of American art of the first half of the twentieth century. ...
A softly drawn work featuring the head of a putto, between wings, on a trimmed sheet of paper, somewhat irregularly shaped, measuring 6 1/2" by 11 3/4" (12" by 17" in modern-day gold frame). There is no signature. Frame has slight chip loss at upper left corner. A true antique drawing with considerable age; how old, it is not easy to say with certainty. There are light folds and creases. Paper is affixed at edges and corners to modern board. Allow for reflections in a few images.
Pencil drawing on paper signed "M.C" at lower right, 5 5/8" by 4" (13" by 10 1/2" as framed), the subject a sketchy topless Bali female nude. This is a work of major Mexican artist MIGUEL COVARRUBIAS (1904-1957). The drawing is on what appears to be a notepad printed with telephone number etc. from a hotel or business in Denpasar, Bali, Indoneisa. There is a collector stamp at lower left which I believe can be researched in the Lugt book of collector stamps. The piece retains an old sticker ...
A most unusual and interesting DOUBLE-SIDED pencil drawing on wove paper, one side featuring an indian in headdress snatching a child off the shore, a tiny fenced white settlement visible in the upper left corner; the other side features a white man in frontier clothing holding his rifle as a native brave swings his tomahawk. Both sides are signed "E Thompson artist". I am not aware of a known artist by this name so this will rest squarely in the folk art or historical categories. The subtle ...
A trio of drawings I have owned for about thirty years---all unsigned, one on tracing paper, the other on heavier paper, and double-sided, the subject apparently Indian Rock, a favorite subject of artists since the 19th century when they visited the Naragansett Bay area of Rhode Island. Perhaps the most famous of the artists who specialized in these scenes was William Stanley Haseltine (1835-1900); his oil paintings of this subject have exceeded $500,000. When I acquired these decades ago in S...
A pastel of the river Seine in Paris with the top of a building in the distance over leafy trees and a barge passing through the arch of a bridge by the American born Louis Orr who spent much of his life in Paris. This in a nice example of his work in a new mat and frame. Sight size of pastel 12 by 16 inches (30 by 40 cm) frame size 19 3/8 by 23 3/8 inches (49 by 59 cm).
Condition: Excellent with acid free mat and backing.
Sepia ink on paper drawing, 5 3/4" by 3 3/4" inside a red mat opening, 11" by 8 1/2" as framed, signed at lower left and dated there 1864, by listed English woman artist SARAH LOUISA KILPACK (1840-1909). This is a sweet, beautiful little drawing by an artist who seems to have created mostly coastal landscapes in oil, especially along the English Channel or around the Channel Islands of Guernsey and Jersey. This would be an early work created when she would have been in only her mid 20's. The ...
Landscape drawing by George Stout, Presented to George Carver in 1927. Original Untouched Condition!!! Rare Drawing by the most important member of the Monuments men. 13 1/2" X 11 1/4"
This is a superb charcoal on paper drawing laid to an old board, signed at upper right (look carefully to find it, in the final photo) Ernest W. Scanes. The paper measures 17" by 22". I would date the work to the 1930's or 1940's, judging from the excellent WPA regionalism style. Indeed, this greatly resembles a number of "AAA" (Associated American Artists) lithograph prints of the period. Scanes is best known as a Michigan artist, certainly a Midwest artist, but also, due to his illustratio...
Fine pencil drawing, possibly illustrator art, of a traditional old doorway in New England or elsewhere in the east, 10 1/2" by 7 1/2" inside the mat, 17" by 13 1/2" framed. There are a few listed artists by this name Don Browne (possibly "Browne"----there might be a fainter version underneath) but I don't believe this to be by one of them, though the work is competently executed. The drawing is in clean, fine condition.
