A finely executed pencil on card portrait of a younger woman, signed at the neck line and dated there 22 July 1924 by listed San Francisco artist PETER A. ILYIN (1887-1950). The oval-shaped card measures 12" by 9" and is unframed. On the reverse in dark brown ink, the artist has written in Russian script (presumably details about the sitter). Ilyin was born in Kazan, Russia, east of Moscow, to an aristocratic family. He showed early interest in art...

Charcoal on paper portrait of a middle aged bearded man, circa 1880, 20" by 16", currently unframed, signed at lower right with initials "M.J.H.". Thinking this was a work by the major artist Martin Johnson Heade, I sent images to Theodore Stebbins, the Heade expert, who said this was not the work of that artist. Ottavio Padovanino, Italian, 1582-1634. This stunning drawing is red chaulk and pencil on paper mounted on paper. It is 15"H by 10.6"W with the name Padovanino handwritten in pencil on the paper below the drawing. Verso is written Alessandro Varotari, Verona, 1588-1648, "Le Padovau...." The condition is good with minor foxing and a darkened edge due to framing. It was in a private collection in Chicago.
