This is a decorative painting of the sweep of the Bay of Naples and its famous Mt. Vesuvius volcano, executed in the classic manner with a few figures scattered in the foreground. A gnarled pine at center provides a dramatic focus point. The painting, 12" by 20" (15" by 23" framed) is old looking but probably dates to the mid 20th century; see staples on the tacking edge, and the reverse of the canvas doesn't look all that old---basically it's a case of looking older than it is...
oil on Masonite contemporary style quayside scene, 9 1/2" by 14" (24 cm. by 36 cm.) with 1 3/4" frame and liner, signed at lower right "L. Neuquelman"...
According to Sotheby's London old master specialists, this painting is an ANTIQUE copy of the major museum work "Stormy Landscape with Philemon and Baucis" by artist SIR PETER PAUL RUBENS (1577-1640), one of the major figures in European art history. The original is presently in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, Austria...
This is a large and impressively painted (28 1/4" by 47" just the painting alone) oil on canvas signed at lower left "J. Mathey 21", showing an early autumn landscape with patches of snow and forest depicted in an impressionist manner. The artist, JACQUES MATHEY (1883-1973), was the son of French artist Paul Mathey (1844-1929)...
Oil on canvas, 20" by 24" (30" by 36" as framed) signed at lower left by well listed and auctioned artist JORDI BONAS (1937-). The scene is a small boat harbor with a traditional church and coastal village in the middle ground. Bonas was born in Barcelona but was in France in his twenties. Exhibitions throughout continental Europe and then the US were held in subsequent years...
Oil on canvas, 21" by 26" (26" by 31" as framed), the subject a winter landscape with coniferous trees in the background, a small unfrozen lake completing the scene. This is an impressionistic work by a nicely listed painter, the works of whom appear with frequency at auctions in Finland. I currently do not have a lot of biographical information on the artist, who was, judging from the label on the reverse (see photo), a member of the Society of Finnish Painters...
PAIR of oils on beveled edge thick wood pine panel, each 11 3/4" by 6 1/4" (and 1 7/8" wide silvery modern era frames), each signed at lower right in flowing script "MORA", not dated but likely circa 1880's to 1890's. There are a number of artists listed with this name but so far I can't definitively attribute these to one of them...
English or Scottish oil on canvas, (or, possibly a continental Europe scene executed by a British artist), 20" by 30" (26" by 36" as framed), signed at lower right "David Dundas", showing a peaceful high mountain lake with distant snowy mountains. I do not see a listing for the artist but the painting has a professional touch and is very decorative and satisfying. Note the reflections, the sky/high clouds, lighting, composition...
A charming impressionistic oil on canvas painting of a French village, 21" by 29" (26" by 33 1/2" framed), signed at lower left by the well-listed prolific French artist GEORGES LAPORTE (1926-2000). The work, painted in grays, browns and greens, reminds a bit of the work of Maurice Vlaminck; note the French-style telephone pole at center. LaPorte painted the French coast of Normandy down to Burgundy, still life, and village scenes. Auction records exist to $9400...
Oil on quality canvas painting of a body of water glimpsed through trees in a foggy, veiled atmosphere, titled on reverse "On the Train to Paris 2003", and signed there by what appears as "Lantin Gunison" or similar. The title captures beautifully a particular scene that would appear only very momentarily on a long train ride, never to be seen again. Surprisingly, given the quality of the work, I am unable to locate an artist by that name or similar (though, I may be misreading the signature)...
Oil on canvas or board behind glass (not examined out of frame), 15 1/2" by 21 1/2" (25" by 31" as framed), signed at lower left, and inscribed there "Bettys-y-Coed" (not dated). This is a well known and picturesque part of Wales, an area that attracted many artists in the 19th and early 20th century. The artist may possibly be the listed EDWARD or EDWIN Masters. The works of those artists have sold at Christie's South Kensington auctions in London...
Oil on canvas painting of incoming waves, painted in an impressionist manner, 15 1/2" by 23 1/2" (19 3/4" by 28" framed) signed at lower left and dated 1906 by listed Danish artist VIGGO LAURITZ HELSTED (1861-1926). This is a pleasing scene and quite typical of the artist's work. He was known for coastal and marine paintings as well as landscape in Denmark. This work has a vertical tear/scuff about 2" long at right center, and the entire disturbed area including scuff is about 4" in length; w...
Oil on canvas, 20" by 27" and simple wood frame 1 1/4" wide on a side, the subject a ceramic vase with exotic bird motif, on a tabletop, the vase and surrounding area filled with various flowers including carnations, hydrangeas, roses of various colors, and perhaps goldenrod. The work is signed at lower right "G Cocco" (GIUSEPPE COCCO 1879-1963), a listed painter from Naples, Italy. Cocco's signature is hard to decipher and as a result I think he is less known than he should be. This is the s...
Oil on panel painting of a mother and wrapped infant in an urban scene of roof tops and power transformers, signature incised in the wet paint at lower right by the noted modern English artist JACK SIMCOCK (1929-2012). Also, on the reverse of the panel is written "Simcock/Mother & Child on a Hill". "The work measures 15" by 30 1/2", (19 1/4" by 35" as framed). The artist, born in Biddulph Moor, lived in Mow Cop most of his life. He is considered part of the "gritty Northern" school of painte...
A beautifully framed, plain beautiful oil on canvas painting, 15" by 18" (23" by 25 1/2" framed), the subject figures in a country landscape, painted skillfully in true impressionist style, by listed French artist EUGENE CHAFFANEL (1860-1929). The artist is Benezit-listed, though biographical information seems to be scarce. He hailed from the Nancy region of western France, and seems to have made a trip to New York in 1887. Chaffanel painted landscape, genre, and portraits. He exhibited at t...
Large charcoal and white gouache on heavy paper drawing, 50" by 32 1/2", (54 1/2" by 37" framed), signed at lower left, and bearing on reverse writing and original label from exhibition at the prestigious Salon des Independants, Paris, 1969. The work is by Russian-born, French artist GENIA HADJI-MINACHE (1907-1972). The auction record does not seem to show a comparable work by the artist, who was known for her book illustrations. She was born in St. Petersburg and after the Russian Revolution...
A finely painted still life masterpiece, 23" by 28" (31 1/2" by 36 1/2" as framed), circa 1950's, signed at lower left by Hungarian artist ROMEK ARPAD (1883-1960). The work features copper pots and a number of glass vessels, some broken, painted in the artist's signature naturalistic, realistic style. Arpad was born in Budapest and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts there under Ede Bello and Laszlo Hegedus. He is known for his table top still life works in this vein but also painted some lan...
Oil on canvasboard, 16" by 20" and 3" of frame and liner, circa 1950's or 1960's I believe, signed at lower left by artist "G. Diehl". At one time I thought there was some possibility that this was a work by Finnish artist Gosta Diehl. The daughter of that artist, Franciska Sundholm, wrote me to say that this is definitely not a work by her father. So this is offered as simply a competently executed modernistic still life painting. The artist had an understanding of Cezanne's Cubist still li...
