Here is a prize for the collector of Californiana----an idealized view of a mission in the golden days of yore, painted around 1935 I would guess. There is a signature at lower right that appears as Y. Arnold or similar. The painting is on a coarse weave canvas, almost like burlap or jute, laid down on an old board, on the back of which is a color print of a landscape. Size is 30" by 24" including the simple narrow wood strip frame...

Oil on board painting of trees in a landscape, 11" by 9" in narrow original frame, signed at lower right by listed artist "A. KLUG". The painting is executed in a very impressionist hand, and is quite lovely, but is also very dirty. A professional cleaning would really be well worthwhile investment. The frame being old is showing its age, with losses as seen. The artist is listed in Davenport's dictionary of artists but there does not seem to be much information available on him or her.

Theodore Hermann William Koppen (German, 1828-1903)

Koppen was born in Brake, Germany and died in Nymphenbourg. He was known for his paintings of marine and historical scenes, as well as portraits.

He is listed in Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs, et Graveurs by Bénézit.

Raphael Soyer, N.A., NY 1899-1987. This charming portrait of a nude black haired woman with upturned arms is oil on canvas. It is about 8" by 10" in a lovely newer frame. It was in the private collection of a prominent North Carolina Art Dealer.

A vintage oil on canvas painting of a river canyon of the west or Southwest, circa 1950's, good-sized at 24" by 32" (32" by 40" in the likely original old charming frame), signed at lower right by artist Charles Crowder. I do not see a "listed" artist name that would correspond. The work much resembles that of California impressionist landscape artist James Merriam (1880-1951). Condition is excellent.

In the tradition of Victorian rose paintings of the late 19th and early 20th century, here is an unframed work, canvas laid on board, 11 1/2" by 21 1/2", signed at lower right "IDMAY". The painting likely dates to the early years of the 20th century, a time when young girls were encouraged to take up the "ladylike" skill of flower painting. "IDMAY" might have been Ida Mae----one of these young ladies. Our artist was of average skill, but her handiwork has outlived her...

A landscape work in impressionist style, featuring a cabin in a forest, signed by listed artist DOROTHY C. NEAL. The piece is signed again on the reverse in pencil and titled there "Cabin in the Aspens/quick sketch/Panguitch Lake, Utah '52". Dorothy Neal was born in St. Paul, Minnesota and was in Chicago by 1920 receiving art instruction at the Art Institute. She worked in commercial art there and later in Los Angeles...

A nicely painted oil on canvas of flowers in a vase, 20" by 16" (22" by 18" in original frame), signed at lower right by Canadian-born, California impressionist artist GEORGIA P(ERKINS) FOSTER (1881-1965). On the reverse is the original label of the Oakland Art Gallery, giving the artist's name and address in Berkeley, and the title, "Marigolds". The impressionist technique is skilled and pleasing, and the work is in good condition, though a cleaning would be complementary...

Claude Charles Buck, Santa Cruz, California, 1890-1974. This stunning jewel is Claude Buck at his usual dreamy best. It is oil on board of a beautiful nude with long flowing red hair sitting outside in a dreamy landscape. It is 7" H by 6" W. It is oil on board and initialed "CB" His painting go for up to $25,000 and he is listed in Davenport and Who was Who in American Art.

Lucille Ireland modernist abstraction - oil on board, circa 1950.

Ireland lived on the Philadelphia Main Line and exhibited at the Stabler gallery during the 1950's in NYC. She is listed in "Women Artists in America".

Image measures 22 1/2" x 33 1/4", frame is 2 1/2" wide.

Condition - very good and original, very minor paint ripple in a small center area.

A late 20th century oil on canvas painting of a landscape, 30" by 30", unframed, signed at lower right "M T O'Brien". The colors used are light and airy----pinks, light blues, whites predominating. The creek or pond is very impressionistically presented. Great for a beach house or other sunny abode.

This is a Signed and Dated Portrait by Fr. Schell. The artist trained under Thomas Eakins and his influence can be seen in this portrait. The artist was from Philadelphia and connected with the Philadelphia Fine Arts Museum. It is mounted in a new goldleaf frame and the canvas measures 24 1/2" x 20 1/2". Excellent Condition.

Julian Walbridge Rix, Peacham, Vermont, 1850-1905. this oil on canvas is 14" by 17" in a beautiful 3 1/2" 19th C frame. It is in excellent condition with one older repair, and is signed lower right. He is listed in Who was Who in American Art and hie painting go up to $15,000.

A small (8 1/2" by 10 3/4" framed) oil on board painting of a white farmhouse with red chimney, red barn and classic windmill at center, circa 1900, signed faintly at lower right "A Sowell" or similar. The hand is primitive, charmingly naive; the scene could be nearly anywhere in the central or eastern United States, most likely the Midwest, Plains or east. A painting which brings on a peaceful feeling in the viewer, as it harkens back to simpler times.

A 30" by 40 1/2" work on canvas, featuring a large barn in a tawny presumably California landscape, an early car housed interestingly in the structure, signed at lower right by noted Utah-born, western American artist DONAL JOLLEY (1933-). Jolley was born in Zion National Park, Utah, and settled in Rim Forest, California, high in the San Bernardino Mountains, in 1970. Dynamic and complex, this is a colorful oil on canvas abstract, 40" by 18" (vertical format), 45" by 23" in the wood frame, titled on the stretcher "Figure in Movement" and signed nearby on the reverse canvas (a little hard to see in the photos). but, it has a significant, jagged unrepaired rip in it. I imagine the painting dates from the late 40's or the 1950's...
