Oil on canvas painting of surf breaking on coastal rocks, 24" by 30" (29" by 35 1/2" framed), signed at lower right by the noted California painter GEORGE SANDERS BICKERSTAFF (1893-1954). Bickerstaff is a familiar name in California plein air art. He was a prolific artist, creating both landscapes of desert and eucalyptus and lupine, as well as seascape. This example probably dates to the late 1940's or early 1950's. It is in very good condition with only a pinpoint loss or two.

Oil on paper or board painting of daffodils in a German beer glass, 23 1/4" by 17" (32" by 26" framed), signed at lower right "G Busby" or similar, and dated there 3/89. This is an airy and modern-feeling work, which reminds a bit of David Hockney and Wayne Thiebaud mixed together (Hockney the overall airiness and top portion, Thiebaud the heavily worked paper doily at bottom)...

ZANDER/25 EAST END AVE/N.Y N.Y 10028". This is a work, possibly circa 1970's or 1980's, by a long-lived gentleman with an extraordinary life history, who happens also to have been a very talented artist. Zander was born in Germany in 1915, and educated in Neuchatel, Switzerland...

Oil on canvas, 24" by 36" (28" by 39" as framed), UNSIGNED, but certainly by the popular listed California artist HERBERT SARTELLE (1885-1955) (I will stand by this). This is a classic mountain scene favored by the artist (he seems to have painted that particular mountain over and over again), with large eucalyptus trees and a lake with distant mountains, all executed in Sartelle's unique impressionistic style and characteristic color palette. The painting probably dates to the 1940s or 1950s...

Oil on canvas painting of autumnal trees in an extensive landscape, signed lower right by artist SAIMA SYVERSON (1891-1978). The work, 24" by 30" (29" by 35" in circa 1950's attractive frame) is an impressive size, and the rich impasto brushwork adds to the appeal. Condition is excellent save for a 1" small narrow loss at extreme top left, and there is a small piece of the frame missing at bottom center...

Oil on canvasboard painting, 14" by 18" (17 1/2" by 21 1/2" in simple wood frame), signed on the reverse by artist James E. Carson of Andover, Massachusetts and titled there "Lobster Cove". This is a peaceful scene, most likely of the Lobster Cove near Annisquam and Gloucester, MA, but I see there is also a Lobster Cove in Maine. Regardless of the exact location, this is a classic scene of New England, captured by a talented artist...

It is inscribed verso with the Title, Artist's name and address and is dated 1942. Costigan's best paintings are the wooded scenes with heavy impasto and brilliant color. Vintage oil on canvas impressionist landscape with rounded low mountains, a country road passing red barns, 25" by 30" (29 1/2" by 34 1/2" framed), signed at lower right corner with what appears as "D Tutis" or "D Totis" or similar. Although the work resembles that of Vermont painter Earl A. Titus (1895-1962), the signature does not correspond with how he signed. So we have a mystery work here. I also checked with relatives of artist George Demont Otis who also declined to identify this as be...

Oil on board painting of a peaceful lake surrounded by forest and peaks in the distance, 11" by 18" (16 1/4" by 23 1/2" in wood frame), unsigned, circa late 1940's to 1950 or so, but executed in an earlier style that goes back to the early years of the century. These freely executed impressionistic works met the demand for affordable original art in the first half of the 20th century, and many are still around, though they have suffered the ravages of time. This example is very clean and in ge...
