Rare oil on canvas painting dating to the pre-statehood Territory of Hawaii days, 12" by 16" (15" by 19" framed), the subject given in pencil on stretcher as "Flow Up Falls" (resembles photos of the Big Island's Rainbow Falls), signed "SMITH 20" at lower right (and "SMITH" appears again on the reverse of the canvas and on the label still affixed at lower right). This is a scene of the Big Island, with 13,000 foot+ snow-capped Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa visible in the far distance...

Here's an unusual item, a painting on white milk glass, in oil, measuring 5 1/2" by 7 1/2" and 8" by 10" as framed. The somewhat folk art feeling work is not signed. I would judge the age as anywhere from about 1880 to about 1920----a nautical type could probably date this more accurately by noting in which decade such a ship would have existed. Condition is good with minor paint losses from scratches and aging. However the small losses are not really noticeable at normal viewing distance...

A scene of an adobe with the classic protruding wooden beams, a low wall, springtime pink/white flowering trees and a split rail fence completing the composition. The work is apparently unsigned. It is laid down (glued) to Masonite panel. It shows signs of having been rolled in the past--long parallel vertical cracks in the paint, as shown in several images. Most certainly it is by a listed artist but this one is a mystery...

Steven Clippinger is a noted American artist who worked in Florida and in California. Oil on canvas of a clapboard cottage by a lake in spring, 18" by 24" with 3" frame, signed at lower left "J.C. FRANCES". I do not see a listing for the artist but he or she was obviously at the very least familiar with the paintings of Henry Pember Smith (1854-1907) and George W. Drew (1875-1968), who painted eerily similar scenes. This painting shows a gambrel roofed cottage with blooming pink blossomed trees and ducks----an idyllic spring idyll in New England or New York state perhaps...
