A circa 1900 oil on canvas painting of roses against a simple dark background, 12 1/2" by 18", and 20" by 24 1/2" in likely original bright gold frame. There does not appear to be a signature. Roses were a popular subject of painters during that period, with many young ladies especially encouraged to take up painting. The American painter George Cochran Lambdin often used dark or black backgrounds for his floral still life works...

Oil on pine wood panel, 6 1/2" by 8 1/2" (11" by 13" in old frame), unsigned, the subject figures in a clearing surrounded by feathery trees, a tiny brush stroke also indicating the presence of a scampering dog accompanying the small party. A charming old antique work in the Hudson River tradition; disappointing not to have found a signature, but I would think the artist listed. The painting has normal old light soiling, and the frame has some edge chips missing in a few places...

A circa late 1800's or circa 1900 antique painting on gray art board of a lake at sunset, a steep outcropping with ruins at left and a small boat completing the composition, unsigned, by an amateur hand, 13 1/2" by 8 3/4" as framed. The work is in an ornate turn of the century frame with a few missing chips that could be easily painted over in gold. This oil on canvas painting of a waterfall in a forest, the light refracting the spray into a rainbow, was acquired by me more than 15 years ago here in Los Angeles. Measuring 14 1/2" by 11 3/4" (19" by 16" in circa 1930 frame), it retains some evidence of a signature, in red, at lower right, that signature ending in "s"; and on the stretcher confidently written in an old hand is "F. De Bergh Richards". (His name has been variously spelled as "De Berg", "DeBourg", etc.)...

An example of a naïve or "primitive" landscape painting in the Hudson River School style, 23 1/2" by 30", (30" by 36" in old frame), unsigned as is typical, circa late 19th or possibly even very early 20th century. The painting has all the elements of such paintings----the feathery trees, cottage with quaint smoke from a chimney, a lone figure in foreground, small distant boats, distant mountain...

Antique circa 1890's oil on canvas painting of a thatch roof dwelling in a forest scene, 24"by 16", (30" by 22 1/2" in mid century frame), unsigned. This work was acquired at the same time and place as two others that are likely by the same American unknown artist---none signed. The brushwork is clearly by a talented and likely "listed" hand, but the lack of a signature frustrates efforts to identify that hand. Condition is excellent; frame though has crumbling of the left edge, due to age...

** PAIR** American 19th century oil on board landscape paintings in Hudson River style, each signed at lower right by listed artist FRANKLIN JAY LEWIS (1838-1910). The feathery trees, color scheme and general handling are in the tradition of the Hudson River School of the eastern states, but these scenes may in fact have been painted in California. Oil on canvas landscape, 10 1/2" by 18", unframed, signed at lower right and dated there 1894 by well listed American artist CHARLES HENRY MILLER (1842-1922). Miller became known for his impressionistic paintings of Queens and points all over Long Island, including East Marion, near the end of the North Fork (Orient Point area). He traveled to Europe in the 1860's and, inspired by the sights and culture, decided to abandon the medical career for which he was preparing, in favor of art. Miller...

This is a late 19th century American painting by an anonymous artist, from the heart of the Victorian age. It measures 16" by 24" on the original stretchers (21 1/4" by 30" including the frame and probably original red velvet liner). The peaceful scene includes a lake with eight ducks in the foreground, a shore in the foreground, two rowboats at right, a quaintly undersized man and woman in Victorian garb at left, overhanging dark trees, a small waterfall emanating from a mill, and distant low...

Florine Hyer was an Iowa-born artist who became known for her exquisite paintings of roses. She was in Los Angeles by 1898, and remained there her entire life with the exception of the year 1908, when she assisted the botanist Luther Burbank at his home and gardens in Santa Rosa, in Sonoma County north of San Francisco. Burbank is reputed to have said, "Florine can paint roses better than gardens can grow them". This example is one of the works by the artist, an oil on canvas measuring 18" by 30...
