A pair of late 18th or early 19th century portraits, one showing a well dressed gentleman seated at a secretary bookcase, the other of his wife, seated and holding a flower. Painted in oils on canvas, the detailing, especially in the man, is stunning. He is wearing a blue coat, an elaborately ruffled shirt, and a silk waistcoat. The edging and every button on the jacket and waistcoat are beautifully rendered in multiple colors...
This miniature of George Washington was found by an advanced collector in London. We have agreed to research this miniature for the owner. The very American style of painting on ivory miniature measures 42mm x 35mm, and is mounted in its original gold frame. To date, we have sent photos of this miniature to Mount Vernon and to another advance collector in the South. We will advise more as we receive more information on this rare item.
Found in far northern Vermont in the course of an art buying trip some years ago, is this unframed 20" by 16" oil on canvas portrait of a man, apparently signed "Shoelman" at lower right and signed again and dated on the reverse (possibly, 1806, though, more likely, 1846, considering the style---the digit likely a "4"). I acquired the painting near Cambridge/Jeffersonville not far from the Canadian border...
Oil on unstretched canvas painting of a traditional temple's courtyard, signed at lower left "Pociecha", "Nikko", and dated 1920. This is a rare, very early work by a painter known commonly as STAN PORAY (Stanislaus Pociecha Poray, 1888-1948), and most associated with California art. The work measures 15 1/2" by 12 1/4". Poray was born into nobility (his father a count) in Krakow, Poland and was educated in art there and in Paris...
This is a early 19th century American Folk Art Oil on canvas Portrait of a gentleman by Erastus Salisbury Field. This could possibly be a self-portrait of Field. He is seated in a chair and he is wearing a stick pin and has a gold chain. It is in its original frame and the frame has some damage and has been repainted gold. The canvas is in untouched condition except for two small marks. It measures 14" x 12" outside the frame. This painting came from an estate in Pass Christian, Miss...

This is a early 19th century portrait of a New York Lady wearing a fur. It appears she is wearing a fur wrap. The oil on canvas portrait measures 26" 21 1/2". The portrait was purchased from the family from Woodstock New York. The name of the lady in the portrait is Mrs. Duenner. We have all the provenance and will advise more later. At this time, I am attributing this portrait to have been done by Sheldon Peck. It is very rare to see fur in paintings...
Oil on canvas painting of a coastal bluff with gentle incoming waves, possibly Rhode Island near Newport but most certainly New England, 12" by 16" (20" by 24" nicely framed), signed at lower right and dated there (likely, a little hard to read) 1908, by Massachusetts artist of the famous Fall River School, BRYANT CHAPIN (1859-1927)...
ANDREW JOHN HENRY WAY 1826-1888; AMERICAN
STILL LIFE OF GRAPES AND WINE; OIL ON CANVAS

AJHW was born and died in the Washington DC area. He was primarily a still life painter although he did paint many portraits. He is especially known for his representation of GRAPES, especially of those grown in the US. He won many awards including the award for "Excellence in Still Life" at the Philadelphia Centennial. Dimensions; 13.25" x 8.75"; framed; 11.5" x 16".
Oil on canvas, 24" by 36" (28 1/2" by 42" as framed), unsigned, showing a Victorian/Gothic type castle ruin by a river, by moonlight. ***UNFORTUNATELY THE PAINTING HAS BEEN SEVERELY DAMAGED IN SHIPPING (vertical rip clear through---started with a pre-existing three inch tear which weakened the canvas and made it vulnerable to further damage), so, will need major restoration. Call or email me for more details...
Oil on canvas laid on old board of a country landscape with an apple tree at left and a split rail fence surrounding a clearing, 14" by 21 3/4" (18" by 26 1/4" as framed), apparently unsigned, but dated 1885 in the lower right corner. I feel the painting could be by a listed artist but the painting is not talking. The predominating greens and browns and the old gold frame make for a Hudson River style painting...
Antique oil on canvas of cherries on a table top, 8" by 11 3/4" (11 1/2" by 15 1/2" as framed), signed indecipherably at lower left; name could be W C Hammond, Hammons, or Higgins, or? The work is in the tradition of American 19th century still life and likely dates to about 1880. Some very old patches on the reverse attest to old battle scars the painting acquired in its some 150 years of existence...
A circa turn of the century oil on canvas painting of a creek and surrounding woods in the autumn of the year, 11 1/2" by 22 1/2", on canvas, and 17 1/2" by 29" in likely original frame, apparently unsigned. The work has survived over a century in excellent condition. No punctures or problems. There are a few chips missing from the frame. A pleasing, easy to live with scene that brings a sense of calm and reflection.
Oil on gray academy board painting, 12" by 17 7/8", 16" by 22" in the rather battered old framing, unsigned, probably executed in the latter years of the nineteenth century in New England...

Red-haired Girl in Profile
Oil on canvas, unsigned
Painting Size: 16” x 14”
Frame Size: 22 ” x 20”
This charming portrait displays the influence of the “Gibson Girl” fashion sense with her softly piled hair and high collared blouse, made popular by the artist Charles Dana Gibson in the 1890’s.

** PAIR** American 19th century oil on board landscape paintings in Hudson River style, each signed at lower right by listed artist FRANKLIN JAY LEWIS (1838-1910). The feathery trees, color scheme and general handling are in the tradition of the Hudson River School of the eastern states, but these scenes may in fact have been painted in California. The artist was born in Wells, Vermont, and crossed the continent at great effort in 1868, arriving in San Jose, California to begin a new life. Le...
This oil on canvas painting of a waterfall in a forest, the light refracting the spray into a rainbow, was acquired by me more than 15 years ago here in Los Angeles. Measuring 14 1/2" by 11 3/4" (19" by 16" in circa 1930 frame), it retains some evidence of a signature, in red, at lower right, that signature ending in "s"; and on the stretcher confidently written in an old hand is "F. De Bergh Richards". (His name has been variously spelled as "De Berg", "DeBourg", etc.). I can say it is possi...
An American 19th century oil on canvas still life, circa 1870-1890, measuring 10" by 16" (12 1/2" by 18 1/2" as framed), unsigned, featuring a metal pot with green and red apples, a pitcher, and a glass, in the classic style of nineteenth century American still life art. I wish the artist had signed his or her work, as he or she was quite skilled. The painting has a patch on the reverse, approximately 3 1/2" by 2", corresponding to a repair in the red apple. It is acceptable as is to the casu...

JOHN JOSEPH ENNEKING- AMERICAN;1841-1916
NOVEMBER TWILIGHT
Oil on Canvas
Signed lower right
Dimensions; 10.25" x 14.25"; framed; 16" x 20".
JJE was one of the most distinguished and successful painters of the late 19th C. He lived most his life in New England, and according to Wikipedia, his "favorite subject is the November Twilight of New England and the half lights of early spring, and late autumn and winter dawn and evening." He always said that his greatest teacher was nature. He ...
Hendricks A. Hallett
(American 1847-1921 )
Sailing Vessels at Sunrise
Oil-on-panel, signed lower right
Painting: 20” x 16”
Frame: 25” x 21”
Born in Massachusetts, Hallett studied in Antwerp and Paris. He is best known for his paintings of ships, notable marine events, and seascapes, many along Boston Harbor. He also painted in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, and on Mount Desert Island in Maine.
Hallett worked outdoors, sketchi...
An example of a naïve or "primitive" landscape painting in the Hudson River School style, 23 1/2" by 30", (30" by 36" in old frame), unsigned as is typical, circa late 19th or possibly even very early 20th century. The painting has all the elements of such paintings----the feathery trees, cottage with quaint smoke from a chimney, a lone figure in foreground, small distant boats, distant mountain. The condition is very good; seems that the painting was apparently relined at some time in the mi...
A circa late 1800's or circa 1900 antique painting on gray art board of a lake at sunset, a steep outcropping with ruins at left and a small boat completing the composition, unsigned, by an amateur hand, 13 1/2" by 8 3/4" as framed. The work is in an ornate turn of the century frame with a few missing chips that could be easily painted over in gold. What more is there to say---it is a classic little painting of its era, perfect for a small or narrow wall.
Antique circa 1890's oil on canvas painting of a thatch roof dwelling in a forest scene, 24"by 16", (30" by 22 1/2" in mid century frame), unsigned. This work was acquired at the same time and place as two others that are likely by the same American unknown artist---none signed. The brushwork is clearly by a talented and likely "listed" hand, but the lack of a signature frustrates efforts to identify that hand. Condition is excellent; frame though has crumbling of the left edge, due to age. ...
Florine Hyer was an Iowa-born artist who became known for her exquisite paintings of roses. She was in Los Angeles by 1898, and remained there her entire life with the exception of the year 1908, when she assisted the botanist Luther Burbank at his home and gardens in Santa Rosa, in Sonoma County north of San Francisco. Burbank is reputed to have said, "Florine can paint roses better than gardens can grow them". This example is one of the works by the artist, an oil on canvas measuring 18" by 30...
Oil on pine wood panel, 6 1/2" by 8 1/2" (11" by 13" in old frame), unsigned, the subject figures in a clearing surrounded by feathery trees, a tiny brush stroke also indicating the presence of a scampering dog accompanying the small party. A charming old antique work in the Hudson River tradition; disappointing not to have found a signature, but I would think the artist listed. The painting has normal old light soiling, and the frame has some edge chips missing in a few places. The work like...
A late 19th century small oil on artist board, unsigned, the subject a quiet glen with small waterfall and pond or creek in a forest. The work measures 14 1/2" by 9 1/2" in likely the original gold frame (now with a missing area at top right corner). A cleaning would work wonders. Old Kansas City framer's label and art board shows a Chicago origin.

This is an oil on canvas, 20" by 30", signed at lower right "J.B. Radway", who was a 19th century California listed artist, (JESSE B. Oil on canvas landscape, 10 1/2" by 18", unframed, signed at lower right and dated there 1894 by well listed American artist CHARLES HENRY MILLER (1842-1922). Miller became known for his impressionistic paintings of Queens and points all over Long Island, including East Marion, near the end of the North Fork (Orient Point area). He traveled to Europe in the 1860's and, inspired by the sights and culture, decided to abandon the medical career for which he was preparing, in favor of art. Miller...
This is a late 19th century American painting by an anonymous artist, from the heart of the Victorian age. It measures 16" by 24" on the original stretchers (21 1/4" by 30" including the frame and probably original red velvet liner). The peaceful scene includes a lake with eight ducks in the foreground, a shore in the foreground, two rowboats at right, a quaintly undersized man and woman in Victorian garb at left, overhanging dark trees, a small waterfall emanating from a mill, and distant low...
Late 19th Century Oil on Canvas, 34" x 26". Portrait of a Gentleman (Not Signed). To date, I attribute this painting to have been painted by John Singer Sargent in 1880. This is a (not approved) portrait of a Philadelphia merchant named John White Fields. I named this portrait Merchant X by JSS. On 5/11/04 the Portrait was presented to the JSS Catalogue Raisonne Committee. On 5/13, the committee reported it could not attribute this portrait to JSS. My painting was reviewed with 29 other paintin...
