Oil on canvas still life of peaches and compote in the East Coast style of the latter part of the 19th century, 21" by 27", presently unframed, signed at lower left "C H Harmon" and dated what appears to be 1880 (or, 1880 something, difficult to read last digit). This is a skillfully painted still life in the tradition of eastern masters like the Ream's, or members of the so-called Fall River School. The table appears to be Eastlake Victorian, with its marble top...

Works by ALBERT HORATIO SLADE (1843-1922) are quite rare in the marketplace. The few that have come to auction feature coastal scenes of Los Angeles, San Diego and Ventura Counties. Prices of $8,000 and even $12,000 have been achieved on several larger works that are site-specific. Some are of great historical interest, as they document early buildings and communities. Slade was born in England and had a photography studio in Toronto, Canada by 1879. He was in San Diego by 1887...

A circa late 1800's or circa 1900 antique painting on gray art board of a lake at sunset, a steep outcropping with ruins at left and a small boat completing the composition, unsigned, by an amateur hand, 13 1/2" by 8 3/4" as framed. The work is in an ornate turn of the century frame with a few missing chips that could be easily painted over in gold. What more is there to say---it is a classic little painting of its era, perfect for a small or narrow wall.

An antique oil on canvas landscape of a distant snow capped mountain range framed by bright late autumn foliage, 15 1/2" by 30" (21 1/2" by 35" in likely the original frame), signed in red at lower right by artist ADELE BRACY and dated there what appears to be 1898 or 1896 (or, in that vicinity towards the earlier side). This is apparently a copy by a talented amateur of an image well-known in the mid 19th century...

Oil on canvas painting of a peaceful eastern scene including distant pyramidal mountain peak, luminous sky, feathery trees and rock formation, the only sign of man an idle rowboat in center foreground, 12" by 20" and 2 1/2" wide period frame, signed with the conjoined initials of the artist at lower left (in red) and dated there 1882...

An American 19th century oil on canvas still life, circa 1870-1890, measuring 10" by 16" (12 1/2" by 18 1/2" as framed), unsigned, featuring a metal pot with green and red apples, a pitcher, and a glass, in the classic style of nineteenth century American still life art. I wish the artist had signed his or her work, as he or she was quite skilled. The painting has a patch on the reverse, approximately 3 1/2" by 2", corresponding to a repair in the red apple...

Oil on board, measuring 13 1/2" by 13 1/2" and 1 1/2" wide gold frame, unsigned, depicting a number of California poppies vignetted against a neutral background. This is a very decorative painting of the California state flower, executed in late Victorian times or early 20th century when such paintings were all the vogue. This one has survived in excellent condition and would be perfect for a Mission, Arts and Crafts, or Southwest style interior. Frame has small losses.

A painting on canvas, 10" by 14" (11" by 15" in simple modern frame), featuring a New England homestead, likely Connecticut, complete with split rail fence and stone wall, signed at lower right and dated there 1892 by Wisconsin-born artist GEORGE SELDEN ROORBACH (1860-1930). The artist was in the Northeast in the 1890's, living with his young bride in the vicinity of Mystic, Connecticut, and also instructing in art in New York City. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1891...

Late 19th Century Oil on Canvas, 34" x 26". Portrait of a Gentleman (Not Signed). To date, I attribute this painting to have been painted by John Singer Sargent in 1880. Oil on canvas American painting of a clipper foundering in a storm, 20" by 27" (22 1/2" by 29 1/2" in a nice old gold period frame), unsigned, circa 1870's. The work strongly resembles that of American marine artist CLEMENT DREW (1806-1889) but is unsigned. The painting is in poor condition currently. It appears to have had a reline decades ago, and likely overpainting. Now there is craquelure throughout, flaking paint and other issues...

Coastal seascape painting on pebbly surface old gray art board, likely the California coast but possibly Maine, circa early twentieth century, unsigned, measuring 7" by 17" (14 1/2" by 25" in its interesting blackish with reddish design frame). The work and framing is very presentable as-is, with just very slight wear to the frame. At the left edge one can see where the portion hidden by framing is fresher in color; therefore we can state that a cleaning would remove the somewhat yellowed varn...

Early landscape painting of a likely imaginary, idealized, pyramidal mountain peak of California, (doesn't really resemble Mt. Shasta, but I suppose it could be), 20" by 16" on the stretchers, painted on canvas, 25 3/4" by 21 3/4" in a fine old gold 19th century frame, signed at lower right by artist "C. A. Simpson" and dated there 1886. The painting is firmly in the luminous tradition of some of the eastern Hudson River artists, with a pinkish glow suffusing the sky. Note the tipis at left lo...

Antique circa 1890's oil on canvas painting of a thatch roof dwelling in a forest scene, 24"by 16", (30" by 22 1/2" in mid century frame), unsigned. This work was acquired at the same time and place as two others that are likely by the same American unknown artist---none signed. The brushwork is clearly by a talented and likely "listed" hand, but the lack of a signature frustrates efforts to identify that hand. Condition is excellent; frame though has crumbling of the left edge, due to age. ...

An example of a naïve or "primitive" landscape painting in the Hudson River School style, 23 1/2" by 30", (30" by 36" in old frame), unsigned as is typical, circa late 19th or possibly even very early 20th century. The painting has all the elements of such paintings----the feathery trees, cottage with quaint smoke from a chimney, a lone figure in foreground, small distant boats, distant mountain. The condition is very good; seems that the painting was apparently relined at some time in the mi...
