This is an impressionistic work by a nicely listed painter, the works of whom appear with frequency at auctions in Finland. I currently do not have a lot of biographical information on the artist, who was, judging from the label on the reverse (see photo), a member of the Society of Finnish Painters...

Original pastel on paper by Vladimir Pavlosky (American, born in 1884 in Ukraine, died in 1944). This work is signed lower right. It is titled "Hillside" on a gallery label verso and dates circa 1925. Pavlosky was a Boston area artist who was inspired by Sargent and Homer. Provenance: Wharton Fine Art.

A 30" by 40 1/2" work on canvas, featuring a large barn in a tawny presumably California landscape, an early car housed interestingly in the structure, signed at lower right by noted Utah-born, western American artist DONAL JOLLEY (1933-). Jolley was born in Zion National Park, Utah, and settled in Rim Forest, California, high in the San Bernardino Mountains, in 1970. Oil on canvas painting of a young blued-eyed blonde woman in circa 1940 hat and provocative gauzy top, 24" by 18" (31" by 24 1/2" framed), signed at lower center by listed French artist CESAR VILOT. There does not seem to be a biography of Vilot but his works of sprawled female nudes and ballerinas show him to be a talented painter of women. This work somewhat resembles the work of artist Jean Gabriel Domergue. Condition is excellent; frame shows some wear especially at left...

Interesting painting of the Southwest, showing Native Americans at a nocturnal religious ceremony or festival such as Penitente, probably in New Mexico, many candles flickering in the scene also populated with processional crosses. The blues of the nocturne dominate the composition, and the yellow crosses and many candles receding into the distance complete this most agreeable painting. The work is signed at bottom right with what appears as "Judith Rossio" or "Romo" or similar...

A wonderful, color-filled painting from Haiti, the subject a tropical village and its various ingredients.....pigs, chickens, and close to FORTY colorfully-clad figures going about their daily lives. (I get a different number every time I count). The painting is signed at lower right "Rodrigue M" and dated 18-12-1971. The artist is RODRIGUE MERVILUS (1947-), born in St. Marc, Haiti. He showed early talent as an artist in the Haitian folk art style. Works have sold at auction...

A PAIR of oil on canvas works, each 14" by 10", unframed, featuring hanging wild birds against a simulated wood-grain background, painted in the then-popular realistic trompe l'oeil manner of painters like William Harnett in America, or Michelangelo Meucci (1840-1909) in Italy. I have been unable to link this to a known artist, but the painting is quite edgy and advanced, and technically skilled, reminding of the work of known artists who paint in what I imagine might be called the "Contemporary Realism" style. An American impressionist coastal seascape painting on the rough side of a Masonite panel, 12" by 16" (19" by 22 1/2" in quality gold frame), signed at lower right by artist Erna Gruenbaum. Oddly, considering the quality, there is no listing of an artist by this name. The painting probably dates to the 1950's or thereabouts. The frame has very light wear but retains its value.

Antique 19th century oil sketch painting on a masonite board, attributed to John Brown Abercromby (1843-1929).
The painting depicts a red-haired young girl sitting on a stool in front of a fireplace and blowing air by the bellows.
The painting is unsigned, however, to the back of the masonite board is taped a scrap of paper with a hand written note “R.S.A J.B. Abercromby”, this note must have been left by someone who knew the name of the artist of the painting.

Oil on canvas, 36" by 24" (45" by 33" as framed in wood), the subject a wicker chair draped with lacy cloth, a painting in the background and tea pot at right, signed with what appears as "Egeun" at lower right and dated 82. A Greek-speaker emailed me to inform me that the signed name is, in Greek, "Eleni" (Greek for "Helen"). This is a bright, contemporary painting in really excellent, fine wall-ready condition.
