A landscape painting with feathery trees silhouetted against a luminous sky, a female figure walking at right with brown cow on the path which borders a creek, signed illegibly at lower right and dated there 1852. Someone invested some money in preserving the work, as it has been relined in recent times. The original stretcher was retained. The work is now stable. It is not perfectly flat however, there being some roll to the canvas especially at bottom...

Oil on canvasboard painting of flowering yucca ("Spanish Bayonet") in a landscape, signed at lower right by Barbara White, a talented artist from Silver City, New Mexico, who was elected first president of the organization in 1968. There does not seem to be much other information readily available on the net, but one reference does indicate that she is deceased. The painting measures 9" by 12" and 15" by 18" framed. The artist wrote her name, address and the title "N...

Contemporary (late 20th century) oil on canvas painting of a lighthouse, and coastal rocks and sea birds, a tall ship at right, signed at lower left by American gallery artist CRAIG SMITH. The work measures 24" by 30" (31" by 37" framed). The scene resembles Portland, Maine's famous lighthouse, but a business card of the artist affixed to the reverse appears to say that this is a Nova Scotia, Canada scene...

A nicely painted oil on Masonite work featuring pears and apples arranged in a still life that is quite colorful and harmonious, the fruit softly modeled. The work measures 16" by 11 3/4" (19 1/2" by 15 1/2" in bright gold framing) and is signed at lower right with a signature that appears to be "Ardi T. Santi" or similar. The painting is very decorative and attractive in its gold frame.

This is a marriage of a circa 1880 gold American Victorian frame with distinctive and unusual diamond patterns in the gilt, the frame rabbet 14" by 18", the framed item total 19 1/2" by 23", a mid 20th century still life signed "Olenick" set into it. It makes for an interesting combination but doesn't have to necessarily stay that way. The antique frame itself is very attractive and could potentially house any number of 19th century paintings...

A colorful oil on canvas of two women and a donkey or horse in a tropical village setting of Haiti, probably executed circa 1960's or 1970's. The little work, 10" by 8", unframed, is signed at bottom center "Mme Brunise", for "Madame Brunise". The "Madame" is interesting as I have not seen that before on a Haitian work...

A quality work, the medium watercolor on a very thin linen type canvas, framed behind glass, 14 1/4" by 18 1/2" (22" by 26" framed), signed at lower right and bearing there a monogram cypher in an oriental art style, by San Diego artist and collector ELSIE STEWART KIMBERLY (1882-1966). There is little information on this talented woman artist, who was evidently most known around the San Diego area...

In the style of famous American abstractionist Sam Francis (1923-1994) is this abstract oil (acrylic?) on canvas "splatter" or "drip" painting, unframed, 25" by 23 1/2", unsigned. The work appears to have some age, to perhaps the 1970's. Note the width of the stretcher (almost two inches). The painting is very clean and would make a smashing decorative work for the most modern of interiors...

A finely painted work on canvas, 16" by 20", unframed, signed at lower left and dated there "60" or "69" by the Scottish-born artist who worked much of his life in England, JOHN PETTIE (1839-1893). The scene is a lavishly appointed bedroom chamber fit for a castle or manor house, a lone female figure at right and her faithful black dog adding an element of interest and mystery...

Oil on canvas, 19" by 27" (25" by 32 1/2" framed), signed in red at lower right L. (LUIGI) PAPALUCA. Papaluca is THE SON OF an artist who died in 1934, known for his depictions of the great sailing ships; works by the son, who emigrated to the United States, are very decorative and popular among collectors of marine art. The painting is in good condition with the exception of several lightly abraded areas, seen in the photos in the sails at left (and one at right portion of sails). This could...

A beautifully painted oil on Masonite work featuring the peak autumn color in the mountains, likely the Laurentians north of Montreal. The artist is VIVIAN WALKER (1903-1994), who signed her name in the wet paint, at lower left. Walker was born in Hawkesbury, Ontario. She received art training in the Montreal area including at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. She was a student of Adam Sherriff Scott and E. Stanley Turnbull (the latter, in New York). Large horizontal format painting of Paris street scene with the classic buildings, kiosk, book stalls, and circa 1960 automobiles, signed at lower right illegibly (and there are some initials on the tacking edge as well as something written on the back of the canvas). The unframed work measures 24" by 48". It could certainly benefit from a cleaning to remove fifty years of accumulated light soiling (removing in the process the yellowish cast) but you would not have to do so to enjoy the scene'...

Old circa 1950 painting on board of the majestic Grand Canyon in Arizona, apparently unsigned, measuring 17 3/4" by 22", plus pleasingly old patterned frame, 1 3/4" wide on a side. The artist had talent but the work is also fairly primitive, in a charming way. A lot of effort went into painting this. I would almost describe it as folk art. Materials suggest a late 1940's or early 1950's age. There's some wear on the frame especially at lower right corner. Application of a little brownish p...

A 19th century English oil on canvas painting, 23" by 36", (offered unframed, even if the inappropriate style frame shows in the images), apparently unsigned, the subject the Edinburgh to London Royal Mail coach pulled by four horses, as it passes through a town. The work is in the style made famous by English artist Charles Cooper Henderson (1803-1877). The handsome coach, staffed by two coachmen, is shown in considerable detail. The painting's classical style will be attractive to those see...

A fine portrait of a lovely young girl, oil on canvas, 14" by 10 1/2", unframed, signed at upper left by listed French artist MAURICE JACQUET (1877-). Jacquet seems to have painted mainly portraits of young women, but a few landscapes are known. This work has just been cleaned and relined, as when found it had a very dry blanched unstable surface, and some loss areas. Before lining, the restorer took photos of the canvas stencil on the reverse, which was of the house of Blanchet, 38 Rue Bonap...
