Born in Germany in 1857 in the town of Harthau, he moved to America and painted in New England and traveled to paint in Europe where this scene was done in Katwijk, which also happens to be the town where he died in 1929. The work depicts the sailing ships of the 19th century in pastel on sanded paper measuring 17x26 inches in a whine period frame

A very interesting mixed media work, on a heavy, soft paper, with I believe pastel, perhaps oil pastel, and maybe even some oil, apparently sadly UNSIGNED, measuring 28 1/2" by 18". The number "5" appears at lower corners. On the backing is written "John Atkins was the first guy I (talked?) to" and "JAY Torrance/Garage (??) Period (??). I do not know what to make of that, if anything, but the names John Atkins and Jay Torrance do not connect with any recognized artist...

A nicely worked pastel drawing of cypress trees in a swamp landscape, Spanish Moss hanging down gracefully, the work signed at lower right "Sr. M. Lucy", 8" by 6" as framed, circa 1950. This is a difficult subject to draw well but the artist accomplished the chore with skill. Condition is excellent. I do not see an obvious listed artist with whom to link this. Framing is simple, work will need to be re-matted/sealed as it is currently loose under the glass.

A very skillfully drawn pastel on paper rendering of the famous and iconic Taos Pueblo in northern New Mexico signed at lower left by artist "C Hanson". The unframed work is housed presently simply matted. Measurements of the sheet are 16" by 19". I have researched the name online and have not located an artist name that might correspond. Pastel drawing of a path among trees at day's end, 9 1/2" by 5 3/4" (13" by 9" framed), signed at lower right by artist E. W. Rost, or possibly E. Vyrost (Vyrost is a Czech surname). The work has a Tonalist or Barbizon feeling. There is an American artist Rost but with different initials, and that artist created mostly etchings. Condition of the drawing is excellent, though the frame has considerable wear, especially at bottom and left.

Nicely executed impressionist pastel drawing of coastal rocks and surf, 9" by 12" (14 1/2" by 17 1/2" framed), unsigned. This came from a collection of Northern California art, including pastel drawings by Carl Sammons, so I would at least entertain the possibility that he could have been the artist, but alas, this is truly unsigned.
