Margulies was born in Vienna and by the 1920's was studying art in New York at the Art Students League, one of his instructors being Joseph Pennell. Chinese fan painting of two cats by the artist Xu Beihong. The cats, one with eyes wide, the other asleep, crouch on a rock under a leafy branch. Xu Beihong (1895-1953) was born in rural Yixing, Jiangsu Province. His father was a private school teacher and Xu began painting at the age of 9. He traveled to Tokyo to study art, returning to China to start teaching at Peking University Arts School...

Watercolor and pencil on paper drawing of a red roofed village church surrounded by small houses and trees, 12 1/4" by 17 7/8" (20 3/4" by 25 1/2" as framed), signed at lower right "V.J. Roux-Champion 1944). The drawing is a work of noted French artist VICTOR JOSEPH ROUX-CHAMPION (1871-1953). Condition is excellent with fresh colors and no water damage or foxing. The artist's works are offered at auction in England and the Continent.

The work on heavy watercolor paper measures 12 1/2" by 17 1/4" and is currently housed in an old frame and mat that should all be discarded (that measuring 21" by 25")...

Gouache on paper landscape drawing, 14" by 21" (27" by 33 1/2" framed), signed somewhat illegibly in the lower right corner in pencil and dated there "43", the subject a small village on the shore of a lake or ocean. The scene, including small white church steeple, reminds me vaguely of the quaint coastal tourist town of Mendocino north of San Francisco. There is no hint as to where the subject is, so, we will just have to guess. The signature might be "Pien" or "Pian" or similar...

Recently acquired from a Southern California German-American family liquidating a household, are twenty-one watercolor paintings by "Uncle Max" (Markus "Max" Hansen, 1898-), featuring mostly Old World landscapes and street scenes, with a few interiors in the mix. Some are framed in wood, some unframed, some have glass, some do not, some are signed, some are not. The artist was talented but is unknown outside of the family...

Traditional watercolor still life of roses, yellow daffodils and maybe some dogwood, arranged in a white vase against a sketchily defined background, 20" by 22 1/2" (27" by 30 3/4" framed), apparently unsigned, though a number "1432" appears at lower right corner under the mat (I do NOT think it says 1932). The paper was laid on a board long ago. I think this dates to the 1940's or so; the hand was trained. Condition is excellent and this is ready for the wall.

Gouache and watercolor on paper laid on board, 9 5/8" by 17 1/4", unframed (protected in a plastic poster box), signed at lower left "Hayden" (HENRI HAYDEN, 1883-1970). This sunny scene incorporates seven figures, all laboring under the Mediterranean sun. One at right in red/white striped shirt is dealing with a bucket load of fish; the lady in yellow dress carries a basket of produce on her head; to her left, several people stoop or bend over, attending to their agricultural tasks...

Watercolor on paper, unsigned, 15 1/2" by 11 3/4" and a 1/2" wide narrow modern frame, no glass, probably dating to circa 1950, the subject a fluted column 19th century style American framed mirror with flowers in a vase placed before it. This is a simple composition but the anonymous artist was obviously skilled in the use of watercolor and also had a sense of composition. There is a modernist touch, in the way the flowers are stuffed into the foreshortened space...

Miniature size watercolor painting of two old structures along a fence line in the fall, 5" by 5 1/2" as framed, signed at lower right "Davis F. Schwartz". The watercolor probably dates to the 1930's or 1940's. Schwartz (1879-1969) has a sizable listing in Hughes' "Artists in California 1786-1940". According to Hughes, the artist was born in Kentucky, and went on to study in the Midwest at Art Institute of Chicago and at schools in Ohio...

Watercolor on paper of gazelle running in an exotic subtropical landscape, 17 1/2" by 13 1/2" inside the mat (27" by 22" framed), unsigned, but obviously by an artist of talent. The work shows a striking visual energy, the animals frozen in mid-step. This could be a scene painted in Africa, or, it could be from the imagination of the artist. The painting probably dates to the 1930's or 1940's or thereabouts; there is an Art Deco feeling...

A rare opportunity to acquire a fine original drawing (13 1/4" by 10 3/8", and 20 1/2" by 16 1/2" in quality mid-century framing) by the world-famous American writer and painter HENRY VALENTINE MILLER (1891-1980). This work is very faintly signed, (and possibly also inscribed, just above the signature) at lower right and is dated there 1946, making it a rather earlier work. The scene is a landscape, perhaps an arid landscape of the west, but it's hard to tell for sure. Certainly it has some age, as the paper is toned (see edge indicating old mat presence in the past) and the reverse is even more browned, with sort of reverse images of the paint.
