Watercolor painting of yellow roses on their prickly stems, 11" by 7 3/4" (16 1/2" by 12 3/4" framed), unsigned, circa late 19th century or early 20th. There is an old framer's label on the reverse backing from Boston. Condition is good, mat should be replaced, as well as old-style acidic old sawn wood backing boards. The mat edges did leave browning to mark their presence but that would be hidden completely by a new mat.

This is one of the rarely encountered works of Latvian-born artist FREDERICK (FRIEDRICH) A. LEEKNEY (1880-1939), signed at lower left, where he wrote "Laguna Beach 1923". The piece, measuring 14 1/2" by 10 1/2" (23" by 19" framed), features grasses at the sand's edge. This would have been painted around the time that the Laguna Beach art colony was at its classical peak, when the town was a magnet to artists of all sorts...

At first glance most would think this a print, but it is guaranteed to be an original drawing. The work on paper, measuring 22" by 18", and 27" by 23" in contemporary gold framing, is signed at lower left in a flowing signature "Petzoldt", followed by "Mchn. 28" (Munich, 1928). The handwriting of the signature and overall nineteenth century appearance of the drawing suggests this could be 1828, but the paper would definitely appear to be of the 20th century...

On that side he/she wrote "Aug. 19 water deeper, especially in the curve". The drawing is by a talented hand which unfortunately did not sign it. This is a very nicely done watercolor painting of a young woman in a flowered hat, holding more roses in her hands, executed in the style of the noted illustrator and artist Harrison Fisher (1875-1934). The work, 10 3/4" by 8 3/4" (16 1/4" by 14 1/2" framed) likely dates to about 1905 or 1910. It is laid down on a card and the mat is laid over that.
