A fine antique watercolor painting of Windsor Castle, the foreground with waterside cattle, boats and birds and a small footbridge, signed at lower left and dated 1852 by well-listed JOSEPH INCE (1806-1859). Ince was a David Cox pupil. He came to London in 1826, exhibiting at the Royal Academy as his skills advanced. Ince became known for drawings and paintings of Cambridge, Oxford, and Wales. This little work featuring Windsor Castle is desirable. There is no glass...

If you collect early art of the Pacific Northwest, this vintage work might be of interest to you. Apparently unsigned, this multi-sided work measures 11" by 19" (14" by 22" as framed). It is executed on old paper, laid on gray board. The charming scene is packed with detail of horse-drawn carriages, dogs like setters or spaniels, trees, houses, and of course the famous snowy cone of Mt. Hood. There is a folk art element in this painting, springing from the details...

PAIR of watercolor coastal scenes, unsigned, circa 1880, on heavy quality watercolor paper, 11" by 18" inside the old mats (18" by 25" in identical framing), found in Essex, Massachusetts. I purchased these for their inherent quality, despite a few condition issues, and hoped to find a signature when I opened them up, but, did not find either signature or any other inscriptions. I imagine these are by a listed artist who worked in the Cape Ann region or in that part of coastal New England...

A fine, highly finished and detailed watercolor painting of a seated lady on a patio, her large lute at her side. The setting is possibly a castle, as a tower in the background suggests. The artist signed at lower right and dated the work 1875. It measures 13 1/2" by 9 1/4" (16 1/2" by 12 1/4" in its attractive circa 1930's framing (note the old Jordan Marsh department store label from Boston on reverse--could have been purchased or framed there). Frame shows some wear on right hand side...

By well listed HENDRIK GERRIT TEN CATE (1803-1856) is this 9 1/2" by 13" watercolor on paper painting (15" by 19" as framed), laid long ago to a card, the subject a few chickens pecking the soil in front of a ramshackle thatch roofed structure I would think might be a barn or out building, except for the telltale domestic woodsmoke venting from the roof. The painting is actually signed "H.J. ten Kaet" at lower left...

A total of FOUR watercolor paintings, framed as pairs, in two frames, each watercolor 10" by 4 7/8", each frame 17 3/4" by 17 3/4". All of the watercolors are signed at lower left with initials "FD". Judging from the scenes, these are likely Northern European and of late nineteenth century date. Condition is excellent, one frame has a little nick at top right. Some research may help determine the identity of the artist.

This is a **PAIR** of fine old works, (each 9" by 19 1/2", 17" by 27 1/2" as identically framed in old gilded oak), both coastal scenes, likely Rhode Island, including both steam and sail vessels on the horizon, tiny fisherman, and wood building at right in one. Each is signed at lower right and dated there 1906 by the well known American 19th century painter EDMUND DARCH LEWIS (1835-1910)...

Watercolor and gouache on paper of a backwater creek or lake surrounded by feathery trees, 12 1/2" by 19 1/2" plus 3 1/2" of mat and frame, unsigned, most likely American. The work is in very good shape save for some age browning of the paper most visible by comparing to the top inch or so which evidently at one time was hidden under a mat. The artist was obviously skilled in watercolor. A very peaceful scene for your wall.

Atmospheric skilled watercolor painting of Venice and the famous lagoon at dawn or sunset, signed at lower right by the artist, GUIDO AGOSTINI (1870-1898, different dates are shown in different reference sources). The painting, 11 3/4" by 15 3/4" inside the present mat, 18" by 22" in simple modern frame, shows the skill of its creator, with fine detail in the architecture, gondola, and figure, and the pink-orange light suffusing the scene...

This is a charming antique watercolor, signed at lower right "Vl. Titelbach", and dated there 1884, the subject a celebratory procession of country folk complete with ox-drawn wagons, horse, drums, pistol being fired in the air and other quaint details. The work is on old browned paper, and it measures 14" by 21" inside the mat. There is no glass (I discarded it---was cracked when this was found, in southern Maine). Presently it is housed only in a simple modern metal frame...

A nineteenth century watercolor painting of high purple mountains looming above an arid landscape framed by two trees at right, unsigned, 6 1/2" by 9 1/2" plus 3/4" wide framing. Found in California, and I lean towards this being a view in that state, though it could be elsewhere in the West or even conceivably in a place like Italy. The houses at far left do not help to solve the riddle. The piece, glued to the backing board, is definitely quite old...

Watercolor on paper, 9 1/2" by 13 3/4" (16 1/2" by 20 1/2" as framed), the subject a 19th century shipwreck engulfed by waves on what appears to be an Atlantic ocean beach, some tiny sails visible on the distant horizon. The artist painted in New England and specifically on Nantucket so this could well be coastal New England. The watercolor is signed at lower left by the listed Ohio and Pennsylvania artist RUFUS WAY SMITH (1840-1900). Smith was a talented artist, judging from the relatively fe...

An English early to mid nineteenth century watercolor, featuring a house or cottage with cross-hatched windows, an arch at left with two small figures nearby, and tree at right. The work is apparently unsigned. The hand is a little stiff and primitive, but the work is antique and charming. Someone spent a considerable sum on the pleasing newish gold frame and hand-drawn "French mat" with lines and glittery goldish foil border. Frame is in generally excellent condition, just a small dig at lo...

Watercolor on paper, unsigned, 9" by 5 1/2", (12 5/8" by 8 5/8" as framed), the subject a mansion's impressive doorway with Corinthian columns, hanging lantern, detailed cornices, balustraded balcony, and green shutters, with lush flowering plantings surrounding the entry. Unfortunately, this is unsigned. There are some framing notes on the reverse in old hand, including "Mrs. Buckingham", but there are no clues as to artist. The drawing was purchased in New England. Condition is excellent, ...

At first glance appearing to be a print, this is in fact a painstakingly executed watercolor drawing, likely French I am thinking, measuring 16" by 20 1/2" (23 3/4" by 28" framed). The subject is of formal 18th century (earlier?) figures lounging on a classical Versailles-like terrace. They are surrounded by a balustrade, fountain, distant trees, and, in the immediate foreground, a border of oversized flowers. Interestingly, curiously, at bottom center, written in Latin, is the following: "N...

Watercolor and pastel mixed media work on paper, 23 3/4" by 17 1/2" (28" by 21 1/4" framed), the subject a mother and her child in a northern European traditional interior (probably Dutch, judging from the wooden shoes and other details), the work signed at lower left "P. Doering" (PAUL DOERING 1864-1947). The artist is most closely associated with sunny California, to which he emigrated in 1910 from Germany, but his commonly encountered works are of people in humble interiors, going about thei...

This is a fine ink and wash drawing, 9 3/4" by 13 3/4" (16 5/8" by 20 1/2" framed), titled at lower left "CAPRI" and signed there by the artist, GONSALVO CARELLI (1818-1910). The artist's name is sometimes spelled "Consalvo" or "Consalve" or "Gonsalve". The scene includes more than ten vessels ranging from little more than rowboats to masted sailing ships. The famous island of Capri looms as a backdrop, the foreground boats filled with carefully drawn figures. Carelli was born in Naples and...
