By the highly underrated Japanese-born artist most closely associated with Minnesota, YAMADA BASKE (1869-1934), this is an early, ethereal 1904 watercolor landscape with tiny figures on a Japanese-style foot bridge, and nearby trees, in the spring, painted in a dreamy, reverie style with delicate light colors. Detailed antique watercolor drawing of a country villa in a park-like setting, an elegant horse-drawn carriage approaching from left, 6" by 9 3/8" (11 1/4" by 14 1/2" in modern day frame), signed at lower right "Herter" and dated there 1838. The villa seems to have Italian or other Mediterranean architectural characteristics, so perhaps we are in Italy, and the artist is a traveler from Germany. Painting signed Fang Zhaoling , (yes this is an emulation), dimensions are 87cm x95cm , with mounting 215cm/84in and W: 112cm/44in Fang Zhaoling (Chinese: 方召麐, 17 January 1914 – 20 February 2006), also known as Lydia Fong, was a Chinese painter and calligrapher. She a led fascinating and turbulent life eventually settling in Hong Kong in 1948. Her daughter is Anson Chan. The painting is well mounted on a traditional scroll.
