A gouache on paper painting of Valletta, the historic, ancient capital of the Mediterranean island of Malta, 4 3/4" by 6 1/2" (9" by 10 1/2" framed), signed at lower left by the noted artist of Malta, VINCENZO d'ESPOSITO (1886-1946). The city is spread around the bell tower at right center, as a sailing craft plies the middle distance and what appears as a lobster trap is in the foreground...

Miniature size watercolor painting of two old structures along a fence line in the fall, 5" by 5 1/2" as framed, signed at lower right "Davis F. Schwartz". The watercolor probably dates to the 1930's or 1940's. Schwartz (1879-1969) has a sizable listing in Hughes' "Artists in California 1786-1940". According to Hughes, the artist was born in Kentucky, and went on to study in the Midwest at Art Institute of Chicago and at schools in Ohio...

Watercolor on paper painting 9 1/2" by 12 3/4" (14 1/2" by 18 1/2" framed), unsigned, executed on old watermarked paper. The scene is a landscape, perhaps an arid landscape of the west, but it's hard to tell for sure. Certainly it has some age, as the paper is toned (see edge indicating old mat presence in the past) and the reverse is even more browned, with sort of reverse images of the paint...

Original watercolor on paper, 6" by 10" (12" by 16" as framed), signed at lower right "William J. Schaldach, Jr." and inscribed at left "To Nellie, with love, from Billy". This could be an oriole but I am not an ornithologist. This is a very clean work and it appears not to have been opened since the 1960's or 1970's. A few tiny black spots visible in some photos are on the glass and not the art itself...

Watercolor on paper painting of redwood, sequoia or pine tree trunk in a forest, unframed, 9 1/4" by 7 3/4", signed at lower left "Mary Inez Tidwell". The work is possibly a fragment, as the top edge and right edge in particular seem to indicate that there might have been more painting at one time; however, there are pin holes in the upper corners and indications of round tacks having been there, so possibly the painting is as originally created...

Recently acquired from a Southern California German-American family liquidating a household, are twenty-one watercolor paintings by "Uncle Max" (Markus "Max" Hansen, 1898-), featuring mostly Old World landscapes and street scenes, with a few interiors in the mix. Some are framed in wood, some unframed, some have glass, some do not, some are signed, some are not. The artist was talented but is unknown outside of the family...

Traditional watercolor still life of roses, yellow daffodils and maybe some dogwood, arranged in a white vase against a sketchily defined background, 20" by 22 1/2" (27" by 30 3/4" framed), apparently unsigned, though a number "1432" appears at lower right corner under the mat (I do NOT think it says 1932). The paper was laid on a board long ago. I think this dates to the 1940's or so; the hand was trained. Condition is excellent and this is ready for the wall.

Watercolor on paper of gazelle running in an exotic subtropical landscape, 17 1/2" by 13 1/2" inside the mat (27" by 22" framed), unsigned, but obviously by an artist of talent. The work shows a striking visual energy, the animals frozen in mid-step. This could be a scene painted in Africa, or, it could be from the imagination of the artist. The painting probably dates to the 1930's or 1940's or thereabouts; there is an Art Deco feeling...

A rare opportunity to acquire a fine original drawing (13 1/4" by 10 3/8", and 20 1/2" by 16 1/2" in quality mid-century framing) by the world-famous American writer and painter HENRY VALENTINE MILLER (1891-1980). This work is very faintly signed, (and possibly also inscribed, just above the signature) at lower right and is dated there 1946, making it a rather earlier work. (Actually seems to read "8/46" or "18/46"...

This is a larger than typically seen watercolor of roses, in the style prevalent around the turn of the century. The work is signed at lower right corner "E. J. Fischer". Measurements are 20" by 29" and 25" by 34" in the white wood frame. There is a listing for an artist in Denmark by that name but I believe this to be an American work and unrelated to the European artist...

Watercolor on paper drawing of a homey mid 19th century interior in America or England, measuring 9 1/8" by 11 5/8" as simply framed, the work signed "Sketch/Walter Richards" at lower right in white. This was probably preliminary art for a more finished drawing or painting by this well known freelance illustrator. The drawing contains a lot of detail for its modest size: five figures are about to eat soup from a cauldron at midday. A clock shows the time; a cat snoozes at the base of the chai...

Watercolor painting titled on the mat in ink "Rockport Bay", the subject small craft in a sheltered small harbor framed by distant hills. The artist signed the drawing at lower left "Norma Page Aug.
