"Barn and House" framed etching and aquatint print by Tanaka Ryohei. The Japanese artist is best known for his intricate prints of rural Japan. This print is most striking in it's simplified, dramatic composition. The roofs are pictured from the side against the black sky. Signed in pencil and numbered 60 of 120. Dated 1993.

This original etching is by Francisco de Goya. It is titled, "The Little Prisoner:" (Le Petit Prisonier). In Spanish title is, 'Tan Bárbara la Seguridad como el Delito': (The imprisonment is as barbarous as the crime). It captures and symbolizes Goya's ideas about the human condition and suffering: a poor soul, quite grim. It was first issued in Gazette des Beaux-Arts, vol. XXII, Paris, 1867. It is pre-framed. Original intaglio by Wendell H. Black (American, 1919-1972), in excellent original unframed condition. This work is titled l.l. and marked A/P, also signed by the artist's widow and dated l.r. It was posthumously printed by Berkley Chappell, who produced the first edition of the lost prints of Wendell Black. Cf. "The Lost Prints of Wendell H. Black" by Henry Sayre. Manuel Robbe, French, 1872-1936, "Claudine," colored etching and aquatint, plate measures 12 x 9 3/4 inches on 24 x 17 3/8 inch arches laid type paper. Print 26 in an edition of 65. C. 1903. Published by Sagot, Paris. Robbe studied at the Academie Julien and the Ecole des Beaux Artes, becoming a master of the aquatint medium. He developed much of his own aquatint techniques, which enabled him to create his uniquely painterly, richly colored images.

Sir Frank Brangwyn, British, 1867-1956, "Scaffolding, No. 1 (L`Échafaudage)," etching, plate measures 19 x 20 3/4 inches on 24 1/2 x 29 1/2 inch wove type paper. A richly inked drypoint from 1919. Catalog reference: Gaunt 245. Edition of 54. Pencil signed in the lower right. Sir Frank Brangwyn was one of the most important British artists of the early 20th century. A member of the Royal Academy, the Royal Watercolor Society, and the Royal Society of British Artists, he was knighted in 1924.
