A late 19th century etching of a young woman, measuring 5 3/4" by 4" inside the mat, the laid paper sheet 10" by 7 1/4", and 19 1/4" by 15 1/2" nicely framed, with a monogram in the plate at right center and an illegible pencil signature at lower right that appears to begin with "J". As the work somewhat resembles some portrait etchings by the famous artist Whistler, and the monogram almost appears as an early Whistlerian "butterfly" before it evolved, I thought the work possibly by Whistler...

ONE OF A NUMBER BY THE ARTIST IN MY SHOP**This is a small etching (the sheet 5 1/4" by 7 3/4", respectably matted but not framed), by the noted California artist HARRIET GENE ROUDEBUSH (1908-1998), titled at lower left margin "Fisherman's Wharf" and pencil signed at lower right by the artist. The image features the fishing boats tied up at the wharf, long before today's mass commercialized tourist scene made the area virtually unrecognizable...

A posthumously published (1993) etching "Men at Rigging", the plate apparently originally cut by famous and important California artist ARMIN HANSEN (1886-1957) circa 1924, even though the work is dated 1930 after the faint plate signature. According to the printed narrative on the backing, the plate was never printed in Hansen's lifetime...

Classic mid 19th century print of a large bird perched on a branch, 20 5/8" by 14 7/8" inside a hand drawn ornate mat, 27" by 20 3/4" framed, with hand coloring of the subject. This print reminds of the Audubon period of ornithological art---in style and overall presentation. There is no indication as to artist, engraver or printer. The print, like many old Audubon examples, has been in a humid environment, as it is heavily foxed, especially at top right, but, really overall...

Pencil signed etching of a religious man leaning on a staff, numbered 48/100 and pencil signed along with "Jerusalem" in lower right margin, by well listed Israeli artist JAKOB (also Jacob and Yaakov) EISENBERG (1897-1966). Etching on paper, 1923, measuring 9" by 13" (15" by 18 3/4" framed---no glass), titled "La Lagune--Venise" in pencil in lower right margin, signed in pencil at lower left margin and numbered there 80 from an edition of 100, by the important artist EDGAR CHAHINE (1874-1947). The influence of Whistler's similar graphic works and drawings featuring Venice is very obvious, what with the big sky and tiny silhouettes of the buildings on the horizon far away...

This is a 20th century restrike of the 1859 etching "Thames Police" (also known as "Wapping Wharf", by the famous American artist JAMES ABBOTT McNEILL WHISTLER (1834-1903). This was printed on a thick, creamy paper at some point in the 20th century. Details in the print are very sharp. The plate mark is quite pronounced. Measurements are 6" by 8 3/4" inside the plate mark and the sheet measures 11 5/8" by 14 1/4", extending well beyond the mat...

A very interesting etching of what appears to be Paris' Montmartre section, (the windmill a famous feature, painted by many artists), signed in pencil in the lower right margin "B. Vilard". Surprisingly I do not see a listing for an artist by this name---could possibly be a pen name.. The work measures 8 1/2" by 11" inside the mat and 13 3/4" by 16 1/4" framed. It is very clean and fresh, despite likely dating to the first half of the 20th century. Note the subtle blue/brown colors.

An original etching made on a zinc plate, 5 3/4" by 6 1/2" inside the present mat (14 1/4" by 18 1/2" in simple black frame), signed in pencil at lower right margin by important 19th century Italian artist GIOVANNI FATTORI (1825-1908). The title of the print is "Strada dei dintorni Fiorentini". Affixed to the backing is a charming old, early 20th century note handwritten in English. It reads (my best interpretation of the difficult to read handwriting) "by one of our best artists Giovanni Fatto...

Original, very scarce (edition of 30?) unframed 1909 etching known as "Pittsburgh, no. II", signed at lower right center in pencil by the important American etcher, illustrator, critic, author and teacher JOSEPH PENNELL (1857-1926). Evidently, Pennell himself printed this particular example as "imp" is written after his name. The sheet, heavily trimmed at three sides as seen, measures 9" by 12". The artist needs little introduction, as he was one of America's most prolific graphic artists, havi...

A PAIR of old engravings from the Passion of Christ series of 14, engraved originally in 1521 by Dutch old master engraver LUCAS VAN LEYDEN (1494-1533). My research leads me to believe these two are apparently later impressions printed on wove rather than laid paper, by noted Flemish engraver Jan Harmansz Muller (1571-1628). (Wove, as opposed to "laid" paper, was not invented until the mid 18th century). The talented Muller made skilled and faithful copies after earlier artists' works. One ...

States in which the artist worked include Louisiana, Virginia, Tennessee, South Carolina, Wisconsin (where he lived for quite some time), Illinois, and notably, Arizona and the Southwest. This is a fine etching by a talented graphic artist who ...
