Francis Hopkinson Smith, American, 1838-1915, "Bath Abbey". This rare, early 20th C. etching by Francis Hopkinson Smith measures 9 7/8 x 7 1/2 inches, pencil signed and titled. Smith was an author, artist and engineer, writing many books but also known for his atmospheric watercolors and oils. In his early years he is credited with building the foundation for the Statue of Liberty. At the age of 50 he gave up his engineering career and devoted the rest of his life to writing and painting.

The artist titled it at lower left "#69 Hell Gate Bridge" and inscribed it in pencil at lower margin "To Harold Swartz--Artist". A fine old etching of a windmill in a low country landscape, signed in pencil and in the plate with a signature that appears to be "J Harvey" or similar. The work is numbered 23/25 at lower right margin. The name being common, there are a number of listed artists that might correspond to this. The numbering suggests a 20th century origin, numbered prints being far less common in the 19th century...

Joseph Pennell 1857-1926 American This is an original pencil signed lithograph by American artist Joseph Pennell. This image is one of his Panama Canal Series that he created in 1912. The image is titled: The Walls of Miraflores Lock, 1912. The image measures 18 1/2X24 3/4 inches, on a Fabiano watermarked laid type paper which measures 20 1/2X25 1/2 inches.
