Impressive French cast bronze image of Napoleon wearing a hat, long coat and boots, carrying a sword, with "A. C. Harron A2372" to the base and a stamp reading "Bronze Garanti Au Titre L.V. Deposee." Approx. 20 by 7 inches, 50.7 by 17.9 cm, no condition issues noted.

The superbly modeled alligator head jaw moves on its hinged mouth when its lever is pushed. The head is emerging from from marshy grasses waiting to catch its prey. The alligator is mounted on ebonized oval support which is held by a gilt bronze rococo plinth.

Overall condition is very good to near excellent though the gilt patination shows minor losses or fading. The base is late 18th / early 19th C. though the alligator dates later in the century...

A fine bronze animalier sculpture by Ferdinand Pautrot (1832-74). The figure represents a pair of songbirds, one of which has caught a fly in its mouth. The other bird appears to be contemplating the possibility of wresting the insect from his companion. Both birds are perched on the rocky ground typical of Pautrot's work.
