These four Minton Gold Ancestral dessert plates (#S 595) are quite handsome indeed. Each are marked on the back and also each has the Minton imprint. The brown-red transfer decoration of flowers and leaves is painted with turquoise and pink enamel to accent the flowers. Each plate is trimmed in gold and is in excellent condition. A work of studio pottery, found in Southern California, the color a rich earthy brown, the vessel pierced intentionally by the artist to create naturalistic openings, similar to the distinctive style of Peter Voulkos (1924-2002). The piece measures 7 1/2" high by 5" diameter. The piece is signed on the bottom "Balvin 79". Surprisingly I do not see a studio potter by this name, but the artist was obviously talented and also familiar with Voulkos' acclaimed work.

Beautiful lobed Kutani yaki dish in Yoshidaya style, modern. Decoration of camellia in white, aubergine, green, speckled yellow and gilt. The back with a character in gilt, possibly Qiu, meaning Autumn. It is also defined by Graesse in his classical work about pottery and porcelain marks as from the village of Shinomine in Arita. These 8 porcelain tea cups and saucers were produced in Hungary by Herend between 1950 and 1970. The saucers are 5 3/4 inches in diameter and the cups are 2 inches high. Number 9 in a series of 12 Fornasetti plates commissioned in the 1970’s by Martini & Rossi. Each plate depicts an item in their wine museum in Pessione, in this case the first barrel – Il Primo Tino - used for the fabrication of the famous Martini vermouth. Pessione is a village in northern Italy, not far from Torino. The back of the plate gives a contextual presentation of the plate and has the Fornasetti brush in hand mark. Diameter "9 ¼ / 23.7 cm. Condition: fine.
