Lovely Japanese Hira Taiko Drum, made from a light hardwood, and hung from a Hiratsuri stand. The drum has iron studding to keep its drum skins in place and gold kanji/kana on a black metal strip, with a gold taiko logo for Maru Masa. A drumstick is included which hangs off a hook from the Hiratsuri stand. Makes a lovely drum sound as it is intact and in good condition. Kokeshi, wooden folk toy of NE Japan. Height: 8.5". This is an example of the "Naruko-kei" tradition of Miyagi Prefecture. The artisan, Akiyama Tadaichi, was born in Meiji 34 (1901) and passed away on May 19th, 1984 (Showa 59.) Pair Japanese carved and hand painted on heavy solid Ivory Mandarin Ducks(couple) with inlaid Mother of Pearl eyes, 3 3/8" high, 4 1/4" x 2" wide each, beautifully detailed carving and painted with water color on Ivory. These couple of Mandarin Ducks are made in Japan during 1950's and sold at Gump's in U.S., still retain the partially torn paper stickers "Made in Japan" on the bottom of the male duck. These pair of ducks should stay together forever...

Rare bag for back pack made of plant, possibly "suge" (Carex) but not 100% sure. It is hand-knitted with very skillful technique. Used by a mountain worker. In excellent condition. 20th century. L:38cm W:27cm

Akebi Hato Guruma, Vine Pigeon on Wheels; Nozawa, Nagano Prefecture. L.4.75"(12cm) x W.2.375"(6cm) x H.2.5"(6.5cm.) ca. 1972, woven akebi vine. The region of Nozawa has long been known for vine weaving craftsmanship, producing utilitarian items like hats, baskets, and teapot trivets. Vines were sourced from nearby mountains and then bleached naturally in local hot springs...

Yuki-boshi (snow hat) or yuki-kabuto (snow helmet) made of palm tree fiber and vegetable indigo dye cotton inside. It has washi painted with Paulownia oil for waterproof, between outside and cotton indigo lining. It is from Shonai region in Yamagata prefecture in Tohoku district. It is said it was worn by "matagi", a hunter. The first half of the 20th century. In good condition with belts inside are left, which is rather rare. 40cm x 50cm

TOOL LIKE MORTISE-SAMPLE

Details and usage really unknown, but would be a sort of old Japanese architectural wooden tool, like size or form sample of mortise (for mortise joint with a combination of mortise and tenon). Happy first encounter, very rare find. Showa period, early-mid 20th century. Large: 14.5 x 2.5 x 3cm (5.70 x 0.98 x 1.18in), Small: 11.5 x 2.5 x 2.5cm (4.52 x 0.98 x 0.98in)...
