Kokeshi, folk toy of NE Japan. Wood, Height 9.625". Zao-kei (Zao Onsen [hot spirng]), Yamagata Prefecture. Made by Oumiya Yasumitsu, who was born in Showa 11 (1936) and passed away on July 19, 1995. Probably made in the mid-late 1970's.

1900s

Each cake is molded with designs of scholars on the fronts and raised calligraphy on the reverse. The designs on the front are all gilded in two shades of gold, and the reverse has gilt seals and some script gilded as well. Each piece is unused and is in good condition.

This Shino ware sake cup was made about 50 years ago in the well-known Suigetsu Gama kiln which was built by one of the greatest Japanese potters of all times, Toyozo Arakawa (1894-1985). He was designated as Living National Treasure by Japanese Government in 1955 and well-known for reviving Shino glazes of Momoyama and Early Edo periods. The signature of his kiln is stamped at the bottom of the cup. The original wooden box with the signature of his kiln name is also included. Size Dia...

Chinese enamel porcelain figurine of Budai, or the Laughing Buddha. He sits in a royal ease position, sporting his usual jolly facial expression, and holds a string of prayer beads in his right band over his belly, with his cloth sack in his left hand, in which he is said to reside. He wears yellow and green robes with blue, green, and red floral patterns, lined in red. His head is very articulated with pierced nostril and ear holes and mouth...

Matsue Hariko Tawara Ushi, Paper Mache Ox Carrying Rice Bales from Matsue, Shimane Prefecture. Ca. early 1970's. Made by H. Kimura. L.3.375"(8.5cm) x H.2"(5cm) x W.2.375"(6cm.) Matsue paper mache dates back to the Edo Period (1600-1868) and has a robust charm. In this rural area, the Ox signifies a good harvest. Matsue is known in the West as the long-time Japanese home of writer Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904.)

This Chinese well-carved lapis deity is 6 inches tall (with base, it is 7 ½ inches tall), 6 ½ inches wide and 3 ½ inches thick. It depicts the Shou Xing, the Chinese deity for longevity. The deity is holding a staff on his shoulder, a RuYi (scepter) is in his other hand. A boy and girl holding a giant peach with both hands are standing in front of him. A crane which has a small bat in its beak is at his side. The peach, Ruyi, crane and bat all mean good luck...

A rare wood carving of a dancing girl with arm raised holding a tambourine. This item was made in China, circa 1966-1976, during the Cultural Revolution period. Condition - the tambourine has been broken - no further damage or restoration...

Kokeshi, folk toy of NE Japan. Wood, Height 9.75". Kijiyama-kei of Akita Prefecture. Made by Satou Shuuichi, born Aug. 7, 1927. This kokeshi probably daes fromt he 1970's-1980's. One of the unique & interesting characteristics of Kijiyama style kokeshi is the depiction of the apron ("maekake" or "maedare") on the body of the doll.

A pair of Japanese Hina dolls decorated with traditional Japanese gold or kinran and non-gold or donsu brocades. The dolls are used in March for Hina Matsuri (also known in a different name as Momo no Sekku). The dolls were created by Ando Keiho, a living treasure, is known for specializing in Hina Dolls. A finely crafted pumpkin shaped Zisha clay Yixing stoneware teapot decorated on one side with applied pumpkin vine decoration. This item carries three seal marks which all bear the name Shi Yu Zhen. Condition: excellent - no chips or cracks and no restoration. Charming Chinese carved jadeite scene of two monkeys on a large peach, one of them holds a lotus leaf like an umbrella, carved out of beautiful white jadeite with areas of lavender, the lotus has dramatic striations of bright green, 20th century. Size: 2 1/2" high

Kokeshi, folk toy of NE Japan. Wood, height 10". Made by Sugawara Toshi, born Showa 13 (1938) and passed away in December of 1992 at the age of 55. Akiu Onsen is a hot spring resort not far from the city of Sendai. It is thought to be one of the oldest kokeshi-making locales in the Tohoku region where all traditional (dentou) kokeshi originate.

Japanese early to mid 20th century ceramic tea cup by SUIGETSU. The tea cup has the design of a camellia blossom done in high relief around the sides of the cup. The cup measures 4 3/8" tall and 3 1/8" in diameter.
