Very early rare Edo Period Japanese ishô-ningyô of an Archer. It is a prototype of the takeda-ningyô Kabuki actor doll. This exceptional ningyô is a fine artistic masterpiece. He has a classic face with painted features creating a charming expression and is wearing sumptuous brocades, possessing the presence of highly sought after early Edo ningyô. Carved of palomar wood and lacquered 30 to 40 times with gofun (oyster shell lacquer) to create a naturalistic effect. It is in good condition with no chips, except small crack, re-lacquered at the inside and bottom, repaired at the inner rim and a small spot of melting at the back side of the lid (as seen in the photos).

Antique Japanese choba tansu (merchant's chest), kiri (paulownia) wood with beautiful iron hardware, large cut out iron lock plates, square drawer pulls, safe box in lower right corner with heavy iron work on door ( 1 key), interior of safe has 3 small kiri drawers, (total of 9 drawers of different sizes on whole piece), Edo Period (c1850). Size: 30 1/2" high x 24" wide x 12 1/2" deep.

A good underglaze blue decorated transitional style jar of a type which was produced in Jingdezhen over a long period, from the Wanli through to the end of the Chongzheng reign, for both the export and the internal markets. Condition - there is old restoration to the rim and there is a firing crack (please see enlargements 4 and 6)...

A very finely engraved paktong ink stone box with copper lining and base. The cover is decorated with Shang dynasty style Gu and Ding vessels and with archaic style chilong dragon border. The base carries the four character maker's mark - "Rong Bao Shang Gong". Condition - very good. 3.7 inches(9.7cm) across; 1.6 inches (4.5cm).
