This very well carved ivory beauty is an early 20th century product. It depicts a young lady holding a round fan in her left hand and carrying a flower basket on her right shoulder. It is 12 ¾” high (with wood base, it is 16” high), 2 ½” wide from her shoulders and 2” thick. Aside from one small age crack line on the base of the ivory, it is in excellent condition.

A finely potted dish decorated with a pattern of scattered shibagaki, bundles of brushwood, which would have formed part of a decorative garden hedge, with boughs of Plum blossom. This pattern was made for the domestic market and would have been particularly appropriate for the celebration of the New Year. The design is referencing the strong winds and storms of early spring. A lovely ancient Egyptian Scarab, more than 2,300 years old, from the famous Mitry collection (see our Homepage). It is 3/8” long (9.5 mm) and made of steatite, an easy-to-carve stone that hardens when heated. Scarabs empowered life and resurrection and were often placed under mummy wrappings to protect the body and to help it resurrect. This Scarab comes in a jewelry display cup.

This is a Japanese antique indigo dye and Bengala dye hemp-Umakake Tsutsugaki-type dyeing. A very impressive and charming pattern of wheel crests, treasure balls and checkers.
