Offered is a handsome, C1870s, woodworkers, Adjustable Dado Plane. It is marked "W.COATES 57 BRIDGE STREET - MANCHESTER" and is most likely of English origin.

Dado planes are designed to cut a groove across the wood's grain. The front-mounted nicker iron would score the edge of the groove and thus avoid splitting and lifting the grain. A very large and usual early type brass mortar with a corrosponding pestle, very decorative and a nice antique for both display and kitchen use. Note the pecular wide upper part, which we haven't seen before and must have been made in a few early years only during the 18th. century.

Hard-to-find English barrel shaped wooden string holder with a pedestal base. Made of lignum vitae wood, the dispensing end has a twist off opening. Circa 1860-1880 it is still a useful object and a great find for the collector. Overall condition is good with only a small chip on the base. Has a beautiful warm patina and measures 5" long at base, 5.5" wide at back, 6.5" high.
