Meiji period, late 1800s

This shallow bowl-shaped dish is set on a high foot with the characteristic Nabeshima comb pattern encircling it. The interior is painted with a design of chrysanthemums in cobalt blue of clear, rich tone. The underside is painted in the same cobalt blue with four groupings of four coin designs often seen on dishes of this size and shape. It is covered overall in a fine clear glaze with only the footring exposing the refined porcelain paste...

A nice example of Guangdong Xicun wares large bowl, decorated with freely drawn brushed iron-black reverse on celadon glaze. Song dynasty 12th-13th century. Condition with a crack on 12 o'clock of first enlargement about 3.5cm, otherwise is good condition without any restoration. Found at Sumatera. Diameter: 23.5cm.

Rare and pretty Inro opening with four compartments and a lid in urushi lacquer with a black background decorated in hiramaki-e with gold lacquer, mitsuda, kirigane and mother-of-pearl inlays, of a traditional cottage above which a bird flies; on the other side, a set of objects including a large basket, branches and a cup. An antique Japanese three-case Inro. The Inro is reddish brown cherry bark lacquered with a dragonfly hovering over a lotus leave and pond. The other side is a continuation of the lotus leaf motif with small gold leaf flowers. The interior has a continuation of the cherry bark surface. The Inro is signed by 'Zeshin" (Shibata Zeshin 1807-1891) with a cursive monogram. Fitted with an orange oval ojime bead.

An Anatolian Marble stone Idol of a lovely 'female' form, Kusura-Beycesultan Type, Early Bronze Age II, Circa 2700-2300 B.C.

The particular shape of this fertility idol is also called a 'Violin-shape', carved as it is in a nice white marble.

Size: c. 5 cm. tall.

Condition: Near Extremely fine and perfect, with much adhired sandy pockets, that can be cleaned if so desired.

Gorgeous Rare Japanese single section isho tansu (clothing chest) from Sado Island, made of kiri (paulownia) wood with translucent reddish orange lacquer finish, fantastic iron hardware including large and elaborate lockplates featuring phoenixes, safe door open to two small drawers, Meiji Period (circa late 1800's). Size: 44 1/2" high x 45 1/2" wide x 17 3/4" deep.

Vernis Martin style French hand painted curio cabinet with gilt bronze mounts. The two glass doors are serpentine along with the front panel dimensions are 74"x 39" x19" deep.

This Japanese tray is 12.5 inches wide and 7.25 inches tall...It is lovely ...Meiji period wireless cloisonne tray depicting birds and flowers in the central field with wide scalloped border picturing Phoenix bird at the top center, a lizard on the right and another bird on the left...really and exceptional piece...the front in in excellant condition. Rather unusual 19th century Asakusa school staghorn netsuke of a fly with spread wings on a folded leaf of a lotus plant with stem, root and 2 tiny bulbs by the bottom. For some reason flies are not common in netsuke. Superb design and excellent quality carving - see the elegant shape of the folded leaf with its veins and delicately incised wing patterns of the insect. Extraordinary warm patina, beautiful darker porous areas and patches of antler outer texture adding charm to the piece...

Flat-bottomed aryballos with two neatly incised male busts showing big eyes and pointed chins. The hair is tied in a tuft (krobylos) by a fillet and falls gently along the shoulder.
The busts alternate with geese. Rosettes in the field. Radiating strokes on shoulder and rim.
Best parallel for the style is Utrecht Univ. 60, Male sirens facing swan, in: D.A. Amyx, Corinthian Vase-Painting of the Archaic Period (1988), 180:B-7.

19th century netsuke carved out of kurumi (natural walnut shell) with two panels depicting, respectively, 4 and 3 scholars around a low table heating up wine and food by the rocks under pine branches and moon among wispy clouds. Full moon and chrysanthemum design surrounding one himotoshi suggest otsukimi - a moon viewing party - traditionally held in September. Fabulous clever crisp carving, well captured quiet mood of the scenes, precisely carved diaper ground...
