One of my favorite insect designs in the world of vintage Mexican silver jewelry, this “machine age” dragonfly is known as a Los Castillo creation yet here it is signed by a “less celebrated” Taxco maestro. What first attracted me to this creature is its “industrial”, perforated wings that make the dragonfly look more delicate but awe-inspiring at the same time. Carefully hand-crafted and perfectly finished, the brooch is decorated with three polished agate cabochons...

Silver dragon head pin copying that of William Spratling by Serafin Moctezuma, Mexico, c.1950's. Meticulously worked and perfectly finished this antique silver repousse cuff bracelet is obviously of Asian origin but I am not quite sure of its exact provenance. I don’t profess any kind of deeper knowledge in the world of Asian jewelry and the existence of cross-pollination and diasporic artisan communities throughout the region (the Indian and Chinese being prominent among them) make its identification a challenge for me. Yet whatever its birthplace might be, this cuff is a little gem of r...

Gorgeous vintage 1960s French star form brooch in silvertone metal with very brilliant prong set rhinestones. The brooch has a French trombone pin close and typical French construction and materials. Possibly by a designer such as Roger Jean Pierre or Roger Scemama. I've attached it to a long strand of glass based faux baroque pearls, hand knotted, with matching silvertone spring ring clasp, from about the same period. The pearls are possibly Gripoix. The brooch is 1 1/2 inches wide. The pearls ...

This lovely American sterling silver and enamel cross exhibits an elaborately scrolled edge and vibrant green enamel. The cross and chain date from at least c. 1915 but could be older. The chain is original and made of flattened, rectangular links; there is no clasp. It tests definitively for silver. The enamel decoration on the cross is intact, and bears the usual minor flaws of handwork. I love zodiac jewelry and thankfully so did the old Mexican maestros! Yet over the years I have noticed that no matter what their form (rings, brooches or bracelets), they are being snatched up with increasing fervor. So saying that they are becoming more difficult to find would not be an understatement, especially for rings which are an already challenging area of collecting in the vintage Mexican jewelry world. It is therefore understandable that I am thrilled to have come upon this mid-centur...
