One of the most interesting - and few - female figures of Mexico's 20th c. Silver Renaissance, Doris Smith Chamberlin was a Texas-born American who decided to move to Mexico in the 1940s to open her own workshop after having completed post-graduate studies in art and having taught woodworking, textile-making and silver-smithing for a few years in California (I am grateful to Decotini for the information)...

This pre-1948 bracelet from Fred Davis is collector quality and a larger than life showpiece.

Composed of five huge oval amethyst cabochons framed within silver, the panels have a geometric design inspired by pre-Columbian clay stamps which Davis collected.

This bracelet is a book-piece design, shown in "Dreaming In Silver" by Penny C. Morrill, p. 69.

The amethysts measure 1 1/2" x 3/4"...

Circa 1940-1945, this stunning and iconic belt from Hector Aguilar is known as the "Georgia O'Keefe" belt. A photo of O'Keefe wearing this belt is shown on page 108 of "Silver Masters of Mexico". Page 107 , bookplate III-24, shows this belt as "Large X's with One Button Belt".

There are different versions of this belt. This one is the largest, with a width of a full 2" for the leather, 2 3/8" at the buckle. Four "X's" measure 3 1/2" wide, 2 1/4" tall...

Vintage long necklace of graduated Gripoix poured glass beads in green and purple, wired with dark goldtone metal, with ornate filigree caps, and cylindrical stamped dark goldtone metal beads, with a screw barrel clasp, circa 1940. Marked MADE IN FRANCE. 37 1/4 inches wearable length. The largest center bead is just under 3/4 inch wide or 17mm. Excellent condition. Display form is life size. Photos enlarged to show detail.

Circa 1930's - 1940's, this bracelet is a stunner. Hallmarked simply "Silver Made in Mexico", it's a book-piece design seldom seen, originally created by Frederick Davis and shown in the Morrill/Berk book "Mexican Silver". No maker's mark on this one.

This is an excellent example of the Mexican Silver Renaissance with chrysoprase stones. The bracelet is 7.25in. long and 2.25in. tall. The cut work is without flaws and exhibits a strong presence on the arm. The weight is 84 grams. The necklace is outstanding. The drops are 2.25 in. tall and has a wearable length of approximately 16in. With the necklace built on a curve where the drops are you can not lay it exactly straight for measurement. The weight is 88 grams heavy...

Beautiful silver filigree bracelet with 8 panels each featuring a different figure in carved and painted bone. Marked CHINA, circa 1930. With a slide clasp. It tests positive for at least 900 silver. Substantial at 49 grams and with excellent detail. Great size -- 1 1/4 inches wide and 7 1/8 inches long clasped. Excellent condition. Photos enlarged to show detail.

This is a distinguished pair of oval shaped gold filled cufflinks with toggles backs, each designed with a central fleur de lys on a mesh-like background surrounded with a scalloped border, the back designed with a guilloche-like design, unmarked but tests 12K gold filled. Measurements: 7/8 in long x 1/2 in wide; Condition is excellent.

A carefully crafted copy of one of Hubert Harmon's Mexican designs, this fabulous sterling silver and amethyst belt buckle is anonymous yet, as quite often is the case, the lack of a signature does not affect the piece's quality and beauty. Based on the workmanship I suspect this may be a Casa Maya example. Casa Maya issued many of Harmon's designs in brass primarily yet they did make them in sterling as well and quite often pieces in their parures went out in the marked without full hallmarks...

Circa 1944-1948, this Hubert Harmon pin is hand-wrought with exquisite repoussé silver work. It's a highly detailed piece, featuring a bird and fish in Harmon's signature whimsical style. The fish has an amethyst eye. Measures 3 1/2" x 2 7/8". Weight is 21.5 grams. Signed and hallmarked "Hand Made Sterling Hubert Harmon Made in Mexico", along with his winged feet. Collector quality.

The "WAVY BOW" pin is one of the rarest and LARGEST sterling pins by the famous designer William Spratling, Mexico, c.1940. This glorious HANDMADE` piece of art measures 6 1/2" by 2 7/8" and is signed "SPRATLING SILVER(in oval) WS(in circle-around which says) SPRATLING MADE IN MEXICO". The design is a stylized generous dotted bow looping around with 7 buttercup flowers peeking through the bow...

A very handsome pair of 18K yellow gold double-sided cufflinks, the faces simply set with round brilliant cut citrines. The prongs holding the stones are reeded for an added a touch of elegance. The citrines have good, deep lemon color with just a hint of orange, have excellent brilliance, and are well-matched. Despite the simplicity of the design, the cufflinks are heavy and feel substantial when being worn. They’re particularly attractive on a blue cuff. The connectors are stamped...

Distinctly Egyptian Revival in its inspiration, the set of Mexican Deco dangle earrings at hand reminds me very much of elements in Margot de Taxco's "Cleopatra" parure; more specifically, the feathers of the "vulture crown" the pharaoh is wearing. More stylized in our case they are here involved in an elaborate knot forming sculptural dangles that hang off the sweetest repousse rosettes. I admit that I have never encountered this specific design before and would also like to draw your attention...

This very early Los Castillo bracelet was likely designed by Margot. A very rare and monumental piece. Collector quality.

A large teardrop amethyst adorns the center front, and the swirls of silver have tiny beading. Can be worn either with the amethyst facing down from the wrist resting on the hand, or the opposite way higher on the wrist.

Width in front is about 2 1/2". Closed, wearable length is 7".

Maestro Velazquez is one of my favorite early Mexican silversmiths. Based on the hallmarks on his work, he was most probably based in Mexico City and his creations are almost always in the so-called Mexico City style of repousse.
