This is a lithograph, apparently signed in the plate only, by the noted American artist RAPHAEL SOYER (1899-1987). Soyer, one of several brothers who became significant figures in American art during the WPA and mid century period, became known for his sensitive studies of human figures in urban settings and interiors. Paintings sell at major auctions, and prints, some hand signed and some not, are regularly encountered. This one is in clean condition and is ready for the wall.

Oil on board, 20" by 24" and frame 2 3/4" wide, signed in the paint at lower right "H. YOSHIZUMI" and dated there "57". Titled on two labels "Monterey Wharf", this is a striking, impressionist yet modern painting by a talented artist who was born in nearby Watsonville of Japanese ancestry. Yoshizumi was incarcerated during World War II at the Poston, Arizona internment camp. Many net references discuss the art he was able to produce while there, depicting his grim and alien surroundings...

I do not see a listing for the name, but, there is a listing for a Los Angeles area artist by the name of Vsevolod Ulianoff (1880-1940), who painted murals like that in the lobby of Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood. A fine John Wesley Jarvis portrait miniature of a woman wearing a white mob cap and a modest white dress with lace collar and bow, the sitter presented against a stippled blue background. Housed in a period replacement red leather travel case with a somewhat illegible and later label on the back stating "Miniature of...Caldwell (Rachel Bishop?)...of...Pauses Webb."

The painting, with no bowing, cracks, or fading, is in very good condition. The sight size is 2 3/4" by 2 3/8".
