This is rather typical subject matter for Garabedian, who worked on the north shore, in Maine, and even away from the coastal areas, always painting in an impressionistic hand...
The famous large folio size Currier and Ives lithograph of 1864, "Winter in the Country" (sometimes referred to by its subtitle, "Getting Ice") is a very desirable image, and the original printing is very rare, highly coveted by collectors, and in 2002 with the late George Cohenour of Pennsylvania, Currier expert and publisher of a widely used price guide, that print is likely the most rare in the entire Currier and Ives production history...

1936 Framed Lithograph by Boyer, signed in pencil "sous il eclus", Sight Size 9 x 7", Frame Size 15 x 12".
A 1978-dated, oil on board painting of a Mid-Century looking building, apparently under construction, in an urban setting, signed at lower right "JAN BAZANOWSKI". The work, 17" by 23" inside the double mat and 24" by 30" in gold metal frame (no glass) is in excellent condition. Frame has some scratches and mat is soiled and could be replaced. The painting is simply very interesting, and unusual; would work well in a Mid-Century setting...
Acrylic on canvas painting titled on reverse "Memory of Rosie", 17" by 24" (21 1/2" by 29" framed). The image is whimsical and rather mysterious, consisting of three white vases or pots each bearing an image, one of a cat, one a bird, one a jester; one speculates that perhaps, Rosie was a beloved cat. Highly stylized plants or flowers emerge from the pots. The artist signed at lower right and dated the painting 1984...
An unusual item...a portion of a birthday or other festive cake on a plate, make of some kind of ceramic material, hand painted very realistically and capable of "fool the eye" (trompe l'oeil), painted in colors reminiscent of the colors used by famous contemporary artist Wayne Thiebaud. Measurements are approximately 8 1/2" across the plate, by 8" in height. The artist has hand signed her name on the bottom of the plate, in black marker...
Gouache and watercolor on paper landscape titled on reverse "Arab Village Near Jerusalem", measuring 14 5/8" by 19 3/4" (26" by 29" as framed), signed at lower right "WM. D. RAFFEL" and dated 1954. This is a beautifully executed work in fine condition save for a cracked (but not detached) upper left corner due to brittleness likely caused by aging...

Thomas Waterman Wood, American, 1823-1903, etching, "Before the Election", 1887, image size: 18 x 14, pencil signed
Pastel on paper drawing, 6" by 10" (12 1/2" by 17" in its original fine old gilt American 19th century frame), signed at lower right "Stubbs", the subject a man in a small rowboat rounding a headland reflecting in the waters, other boats beyond. This is a scarce, to judge from the auction records, early drawing by the noted American marine artist WILLIAM PIERCE STUBBS (1842-1909)...

Oil on canvasboard painting of flowers, vase and pot, 9 3/4" by 13 1/2" (14" by 18" framed), signed at lower right "L. E. Thackery". No listed artist comes up with a search for this name, but that does not diminish the quality of the work itself, which probably dates to about the 1940's. There are two missing small areas of paint at left, otherwise condition is excellent. The frame post-dates the art and is pleasant and complementary.
One of dozens of drawings by this artist that I recently acquired, (ask to see others, not yet added to my shop), this is a fine image in charcoal with some strategic and deftly placed green, red and blue color added with chalk or pastel, 12" by 16 3/4", unframed, signed at lower right, and dated there 8/20 '58, by the California and Massachusetts listed artist DAISY MARGUERITE HUGHES (1882-1968)...

If you admire the work of Norman Rockwell, and millions do, as evidenced by spectacular auction records over $30 million, but you cannot quite afford that-----yet, would love to own something that Rockwell touched, then consider this beautiful print, (**ONE OF TWO SIMILAR PRINTS I HAVE CURRENTLY IN MY SHOP**), the title being "Springtime in Stockbridge", measuring 16 1/2" by 32". The original was painted for LOOK magazine and this poster was issued in 1971 by Cowles Communications, Inc. Rockwell...
A nicely done miniature portrait, on natural organic material, of an attractive young woman. The sitter is wearing a white dress, a black necklace and earrings, and an upswept hairdo. The painting is housed in its blue velvet travel case, with a glass cover.
Condition is excellent, with no problems. The sight size is 2" by 1 1/2", and the closed case size is 3" by 2 1/2".
A beautiful original 18th century drawing of a woman gazing upward Attributed to Francois Boucher measuring 24.5 x 31 cm. on wove paper mounted at corners to matte board. A beautiful drawing would be a fine addition to any collection.
Biography
François Boucher (September 29, 1703 - May 30, 1770) was a French painter, a proponent of Rococo taste, known for his idyllic and voluptuous paintings on classical themes, decorative allegories representing the arts or pastoral occupations, and in...
Oil on canvas painting, unsigned, 24" by 12", in pinkish wood strip framing. The colors of the painting could be described as creamy light pink with some green. The work might have some age as it appears that "12-81" is written on the stretcher, possibly a date; and olden-days "$2.03" price is stamped on inside of the frame. There is a three-dimensional relief in places, where the artist spread the paint. No varnish, dull surface.
One of a number of William Russell Flint prints in my shop, this is a fresh and clean example of the fine Flint photolithographs issued for collectors over a period of decades. This example, published in 1957 in an edition of 700, is signed in pencil at lower right and bears the characteristic embossed blindstamp in lower left margin. The title is "Rosa and Marissa". The print measures 18 3/4" by 24 3/4" inside the mat and 27" by 33 1/2" as framed. The two models, artistically placed at opposit...
This is an interesting very old monochromatic watercolor, circa late 18th century or very early 19th, measuring 4 1/2" by 8 3/4" (11" by 14" framed). The drawing has the feel of an old master drawing. The scene includes tiny figures, buildings, a willowy tree at right, and what appears as an isolated hill or butte-like feature in the distance. The work itself is not signed, but at lower right, written very faintly in pencil in the mat, is "Waterloo" and another word that is difficult to decip...
Sepia ink on paper drawing, 5 3/4" by 3 3/4" inside a red mat opening, 11" by 8 1/2" as framed, signed at lower left and dated there 1864, by listed English woman artist SARAH LOUISA KILPACK (1840-1909). This is a sweet, beautiful little drawing by an artist who seems to have created mostly coastal landscapes in oil, especially along the English Channel or around the Channel Islands of Guernsey and Jersey. This would be an early work created when she would have been in only her mid 20's. The ...
This is a work in gouache, tempera or casein, 17 1/2" by 23 1/2" inside the mat liner (30" by 36" as nicely framed), signed at lower right in white "Liberte". JEAN LIBERTE (1896-1965) was an artist noted in reference works as early as the 1940's. A student at Cooper Union in New York and at the Art Students League with Kenneth Hayes Miller (at which he went on to teach, himself, after 1945), Liberte was a painter of many northeastern landscapes, including the Maine coast, Monhegan Island, and ...
Two antique prints circa 17th century, matted together, one featuring profiles of a man's head (6 1/2" by 9 1/2"), the other a study of a bare foot and a foot in a sandal (6 1/2" by 4 1/2"), the head profiles, originally drawn by Annibale Carracci (1560-1609) for his "Livre de Portraiture", subsequently transferred into engravings, likely by Jan Van Haelbeck (fl. 1600-1630) and published in Paris in 1667 by Francois de Poilly. Carracci's name is at lower left, and de Poilly at lower right. The ...
Early and rarely encountered oversized Japanese limited edition sosaku hanga “kappa-ban” (stencil print) by Yoshitoshi Mori (1898-1992) depicting tradesmen. The print is pencil-signed “Yoshitoshi Mori” at the lower right, dated ’68, and numbered 28/60. The artist’s red seal is above the signature. The paper measures 26 1/2”V x 21 1/2”H. The print is in good overall condition. The portion of the paper edge that was previously covered by a mat is very sightly darker. There are two...

His works can be found in the Smithsonian Institute; among his private c...
Beautifully executed in black and gray with minimal color, understated still life of an old style tin coffee pot, cooking pot, and white cup, 8" by 10 1/2" inside the mat, 15 1/2" by 17 1/2" as framed. There is possibly a monogram in lower right corner but I cannot attach it to any particular artist. The item is in a frame that evidently once came with a work by American landscape artist George Renouard, as the title on the label is "New Jersey Farm"---and there are old Butterfields auction la...

Etching on paper, 11 3/4" by 13 1/2" as simply framed, the scene silhouetted ships in the harbor, the rising sun and new day ahead suggested by etched lines in the sky, pencil titled at margin "Dawn Portland Harbor" and signed at lower right and dated there 1915. The artist, Massachusetts-born PHILIP LITTLE (1857-1942) was a highly regarded impressionist American painter and etcher, an artist who had a truly American vision as he was not educated in Europe. After considering entering his fathe...

“Bouquet a la Flute”
Oil on canvas 25 5/8” x 21 ¼” w/o frame
Gaston Sebire was born in Saint-Samson, Normandy, France, August 18, 1920. He attended School in Rouen, then entered the postal service, working at night and devoting himself to painting during the day. His first big break came in 1953, when he won the honorable job of designing the costumes and decorations of L'Ange gris, a ballet written by Claude Debussy for the Marquis of Cuevas. Moving to Normandy soon after, he buried...
This is a large and accomplished watercolor painting of a pedestrian-friendly, appealing street, (18" by 26 3/4", 24" by 44" framed) by the noted American watercolorist painter and much-loved art educator RUTH BADERIAN (1927-2010). From the names of the businesses in the scene, I was able to determine that the street scene is from Christiansted, St. Croix, United States Virgin Islands, in the Caribbean. Baderian, who passed away in 2010 in her eighties, was a familiar figure on the watercolor ...
A Fine Painting by the Listed Oklahoma Artist, Eula L. Grimes. Painting measures about 22" by 26" and is signed lower left. Does have a little wear and a couple of scratches, but shows well. Great Mid Century look.
Watercolor on paper, 10 1/4" by 5 1/4" (15 1/2" by 10 1/2" framed), the subject apparently an ornate inner courtyard of a famous Portuguese palace and present day tourist magnet, the Sintra National Palace near Lisbon. I am guessing on this, having googled various possibilities, but comparing the window style, wonderful tile details and the castellated ledge at top, I think the odds are excellent that this be the Portuguese subject. Inchbold (1856-1921) was an English-born artist who traveled ...

Oil on canvas painting of yellow roses and fruit in a blue vase, 18" by 24" (27" by 33" in original frame), signed at lower left and signed again and titled "Yellow Roses & Fruit" on reverse, along with the artist's then-address at 330 South Coast Blvd. (now called South Coast Highway) in Laguna Beach, California. This is an excellent example of Kerr's work, likely dating to the 1960's when he had a gallery in Laguna before moving to Mendocino County in Northern California. Kerr was born i...
Oil on canvas, circa late nineteenth century, 21 1/2" by 26 3/4" and about one inch wide framing, unsigned, featuring feathery trees, distant snowy mountains, a lake with small sail craft, and a gentleman pulling in nets on another small boat. This painting is in need of restoration, but, I believe it well worth saving for posterity. There are some holes, the largest about 3/4" by 1/2", at lower left, a similar one at upper left, and some much smaller punctures at far right. The painting is ...
One of a number of fine Bermuda watercolors in my shop, this is a work featuring white-roofed houses on the water, several small boats visible at left, and yucca at right. The work measures 6 1/4" by 13 3/4" and 16" by 23 1/2" including old gilded oak frame and gold mat typical of the period. The artist signed at lower left "A. T. Smith" and wrote "Bermuda '95" at lower right. I do not see information on an artist by this name. Nineteenth century Bermuda views are scarce and desirable. A ra...
Two fine engravings of Mount Vernon, and the White House, each framed and measuring 6 3/4" by 8 3/4". These appear to be the same images that have appeared on US currency in the past, and the very high quality type of printing (intaglio?) is the same process. These were produced by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, either as printing proofs, or perhaps as official souvenirs to be sold in a gift shop setting----the Bureau's name is printed at the bottom of each. The detail is extremely crisp...
Oil on board peaceful landscape of a house backed by trees in a clearing, a dirt track leading into the scene, 12 1/2" by 15 1/2" as framed, signed at lower left "Westerlund" with some illegible letters before that, circa 1970's or 1980's I would guess. The lettering style and period after the name leads me to think this could be a European or European trained artist, but the scene might be American. The painting is in excellent condition and ready for display. I do not at present seem to be ...
As suggested by the contradictory title "colorful vintage folk art painting....by Brazilian modernist", this is a very unusual, difficult-to-describe, interesting oil on canvas painting of Christ on the cross, the background a complex mix of bright primary color and modernist forms, signed at lower right by artist "Edelweiss". On the stretcher is written apparently in Portuguese, "Cobia alada da guita" or similar, along with the original $1520 USD price. The work measures 36" by 28 3/4" on the...

Vlaminck is known as a Fauvist and later simply as an expressionist. At auctions, Vlaminck's works in oil bring from the low hundreds of thousands of dollars to the low millions. He was a formidable presence ...

Maggy Monier, 1887-1965 Notable French art-déco painter, Maggy Monier was renowned for her watercolor postcards. A very appealing small forest interior painting on board, 9" by 11" (12" by 14" in modern day gold framing), unsigned on front but on reverse in old hand is written (difficult to decipher) "near XXX farm Hampstead Heath/Oct. 3 1908 5 PM/P. P. (XXXX)". The word after P.P. is the last name of the artist but it has defied my efforts to make it out. The scene is painted in luminous tan colors with light grayish green and cream here and there, all in a very impressionistic blond to silvery light. ...
