John James Audubon's Birds of America ranks among the most majestic of American fine arts, blending the disciplines of ornithology with 2 forms of art - watercolor and print making, and capturing the primitive state of the still young nation vast natural endowment. We are fortunate enough to have one of these prints produced by Robert Havell in 1836.
The artistic stance of this subject, Bonapartian Gulls, commends it as an especially desirable Audubon print for 3 primary reasons: 1...
A naïve miniature watercolor on wafer painting of a gentleman with a piercing gaze and a neatly trimmed beard. Set against a darkish green background, he is wearing a black jacket, vest, and tie with a stickpin. In a cast foliate case with a coil of plaited hair in the glazed window on the reverse.
Condition is excellent, with no issues. Sight size is 2 1/8" by 1 3/4", and the overall size is 2 3/8" by 2".
A strikingly limned portrait miniature painted in watercolor on natural substrate. Because of the framing, the artistic technique used, and the pose, there are very strong indications that this is a China Trade piece. The sitter is clad in a deep navy jacket with a striped vest, and a masonic pin adorning his shirt.
The painting is in excellent condition, with no issues...

Reginald Cleveland Coxe, American, 1855-1926, "Home Again". This is an atmospheric scene of a ship coming into port, pulled by a tugboat; it is rendered with remarkabley delicate lines and a rich yet quite subtle tonal range, giving a strong sense of a soft morning fog over calm waters. The canvas sails of the ship beautifully contrast with the steam of the tug as is dissipates into the misty air. The image measures 19 x 23 inches, published in 1887, pencil signed on the lower right margin...
Beautifully executed pastel in subtle white, gray and tan, this is an image of Sacre Coeur and Montmartre in snow, signed at lower left by artist R. A. Badenhop. I am unable to locate an artist of this name, despite the obvious quality of the work, which measures 20" by 16 1/2" (27" by 23 1/2" framed). The empty streets, teeming with tourists and visitors on more pleasant summer days, make for an unusual sight in this famous and crowded section of Paris...

Haku Maki was a Japanese print master of the late 20th century. His prints at the time this one was published were strong on the use of kanji and abstract designs, as shown here. An oil on panel painting of a red covered bridge in a mountain landscape, a village at left center, 13" by 19 1/2" (16" by 22" framed), signed at lower right by artist Ed Mifflin. I do not see a listing for this name. The scene likely shows Vermont or Maine; possibly there are covered bridges in hilly southern Ohio that might fit. In any event the circa 1960 work is very poetic. The black panel on which this is painted was not meant for art use, leading one to suspect that the artist was a t...

Early 20th century Dutch harbor scene by Gerard Wiegman (1875-1964). The painting depicts a large cargo ship moored at harbor and surrounded by a variety of smaller ships, fishing boats and tugs. The sky is painted in moody shades of grays that echo the colors of the dark smoke rising from the other large ships in the background. This choice of coloring suggests the obvious industrial nature of this unidentified harbor. The paint was primarily applied with broad brushstrokes, but a thicker impas...
