There is little biographical information on Simonetti, and it has been suggested that it is a pseudonym for Gian Gianni who was one of the last of the view painters of Italy. Gianni worked mostly in watercolor and produced views of Naples and Venice for people who were making the Grand Tour...
A finely painted watercolor portrait of a good looking gentleman wearing a black jacket and a white shirt, stock and collar. The talented artist specifically painted the entire piece in shades of white, black, and gray. Note the way he used white highlighting on the left collar and shoulder of the sitter to give a sense of depth to the piece.
The back of this work deserves special mention as it is composed of a backing of metal guilloche...

This is a fine early printing of the well known etching, Bibi Valentin by American artist James M Whistler. This etching created in 1859 is impression II/II before the plate was damaged. It came to us with the original Kappel label on the back. A fine rich impression printed on a thin laid japan type paper. Signed and dated within the plate. Glascow 34.
Arthur J. T. Briscoe, British, 1873-1943, "Furling the Foresail". This etching by Arthur Briscoe measures 7 7/8 x 11 7/8 inches. Ink signed and numbered on cream laid paper, 1924. Cat: Hurst-85. Framed. Briscoe is known as one of the finest marine etcher of the 20th. century. He owned his own three ton cutter which he used to sail around the Essex coast. Also crewing on a Polish ship, he sketched every aspect of life on the boat...

This is an ORIGINAL WORK, not a print, by the famous American artist EDNA HIBEL (PLOTKIN), recently deceased at age 97 in Florida. The painting of two young figures, one evidently playing a lute-like instrument, is a mixed media work (oil and watercolor) on silk which has been laid down to a Masonite panel. It measures 29" by 17" (37" by 25" framed including a linen liner). Hibel was born in Boston of Jewish parentage and educated in art at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School...
