A charming work in watercolor with white gouache highlights, 13 1/2" by 10 1/2" (19" by 16" framed), featuring a young woman in the hugely popular Gibson tradition of the early years of the century, viewing her image in a hand-held decorative Art Nouveau mirror as she applies her lipstick. The work is signed at left "L. B. Hill" and dated 1910. Gibson had many imitators of his illustration style, some very talented and some less talented. This piece would be ideal in a woman's dressing area...

A lovely highly impressionist oil on board painting of coffee pots and creamers on a table, apparently unsigned, and of vintage age, possibly 1930's or 1940's I believe. The work measures 14 1/2" by 15 1/4" (18" by 18 1/2" framed). On the reverse of the old board is written in old hand in pencil what appears as "Robert Swasey/327 Spring St./Portland Maine". I have looked for the name Robert Swasey in standard art search sites and have not located a known recognized painter by this name...

A woodblock print with vivid PRINTED blue, red, green and yellow colors (NOT hand coloring), the subject a street scene in a German town, with extensive pencil writing in the bottom margin and what appears to be the date 1909. I showed images of this old style Germanic handwriting to Galerie Bassenge in Berlin and they were also unable to determine an artist name, but the writing is "Linolschnitt Orig. Handdruck...Alt Bielefeld…Bachstrasse...1909" (linocut, hand printed, Alt Bielefeld, etc.)...

An early 20thC oil on canvas by Rhode Island artist, Emma Lavinia Swan ( 1853-1927). This is an atypical and rare scene since Swan is noted from her floral paintings. It appears to have its original black wood frame. Signed in the lower right hand corner. The canvas measures 9" x 9"; frame 17" x 17". Listed/Davenports.

A fine miniature portrait painting, on natural organic material, done by John Alexander McDougall. The sitter is a distinguished gentleman dressed fashionably in a ruffled blue shirt, light blue vest, and black coat.

The miniature is in excellent condition, with no problems or restoration. The brass case is also without flaws. The photo of the back does appear to have blemishes, but these are label residues...

THOMAS CRESWICK R A; 1811-1869; BRITISH CROSSING THE STREAM; Oil on Canvas Thomas Creswick was a British landscape painter. Among his most favorite subjects were English and Welsh streams and British rural scenery. He exhibited in many art venues including the Royal Academy and the British Institute of Art. Born in Toronto, he was a founding member of the renowned Toronto painters known as the Group of Seven, which he left by 1926. He became a principal of the Winnipeg School of Art and later the Ontario College of Art. He changed his signature to "Franz" in 1927 on the advice of a friend...

This charming miniature, done in watercolor on natural wafer, shows a little girl who obviously just spent time working diligently picking enough berries to fill her basket. Judging by her slight smile, she either had fun doing that, or is anticipating enjoying the (literal) fruits of her labors.

Note how the artist, as naive as was his style, took care to magnify the use of certain features by highlighting them in various areas, such as using the blue background and the blue bow to go w...
