This is a superb charcoal on paper drawing laid to an old board, signed at upper right (look carefully to find it, in the final photo) Ernest W. Scanes. The paper measures 17" by 22". I would date the work to the 1930's or 1940's, judging from the excellent WPA regionalism style. Indeed, this greatly resembles a number of "AAA" (Associated American Artists) lithograph prints of the period...

Watercolor and ink drawing, 4" by 5 7/8" inside the innermost of three mats (9 1/2" by 11 1/4" as framed), signed at lower left and inscribed "STUDY" by artist DAVE POWELL (born 1954), son of noted deceased Western American artists Ace Powell and Nancy McLaughlin Powell. This is a skillfully executed drawing. The caricature of an early 19th century Mountain Man in fringed clothing fighting a bear with his flintlock pistol is almost comical...

A gray soapstone carving of a blubbery walrus, measuring roughly 8" by 2" by 2". These carvings, which make great paperweights, sold as tourist art in northern, Arctic regions of Canada at mid century remain popular, and a secondary market has evolved. The artist has reduced the familiar animal to a stylized, modern form. Condition is good with no chips. See several other similar works in my shop.

FLYING BIRD WITH WHEEL

Old Japanese mechanical toy as amateur wooden handicraft from Showa period, 20th century. When wheeled back and forward tightly, head shaking and wings flapping but as barely and awkwardly and just lovely. (So, more like a decorative object than practical movable toy, please.) approx. W 27.5 x D 18 x H 19cm (10.82 x 7.08 x 7.48in)...

Oil on canvas painting of flowers, possibly asters, signed at lower right by 20th century listed English artist Leslie S. G. Harries. There is no date on the painting but a guess of 1950 would likely be close. The work measures 18 1/2" by 15 1/4" (21 1/2" by 18" framed). Condition is excellent with just a very small uneven/pressure mark area in the canvas to the right of the petal at right, and there are a few pinpoint losses in that area...

A PAIR of ink on wove paper drawings apparently by the same anonymous talented artist, one work featuring a southern American-looking old historic style home, the other a fountain in a southern European street scene (probably Italy). I opened the items and determined that there is no signature of any kind, nor any other indication of authorship. The home scene has pencil sketching on the reverse, possibly a very sketchy, preliminary architectural plan drawing...

Oil on canvas laid against wood panel painting of a young woman in traditional type clothing of Southeast Asia, likely the Philippines or Indonesia. The sizable work measures 37" by 24" (43 1/2" by 30 1/2" in wood frame). At lower right, in red, there does appear to be a signature but I am not certain as to how it reads; possibly "HA.....". The canvas is a little buckled especially at left, as it is laid against the panel and not firmly glued to it...

A vintage, 1972 re-issue of the Maurits Cornelius Escher print "Metamorphose" (1939-40), possibly a posthumous or commemorative printing, as its date coincides with the year of Escher's death.
