Maria Ada Gianni 1873-1956 Italian This is a fine original gouache painting by Italian artist Maria Gianni. The scene is the Bay of Naples with Mt Vesuvius in the background. The painting is signed lower left. The image measures 5X12 1/2 inches and came to us in what appears to be the original early frame which measures 8X16 inches.

A beautifully executed oil on canvas painting by George Harland, a noted British artist. The scene depicts a man returning in a rowboat at dusk. It combines elements of luminism and impressionism, and was done when both of those styles were in fashion. Harland was a highly thought of painter and was exhibited at the Royal Academy in London in 1907.

Pastel and gouache mixed media work on red paper, measuring 18 1/4" by 13 1/2" plus thin old black wood frame, signed at lower right with what appears to be "Macero Arbuckle" and dated '04 (1904). I don't see any information on the artist. This is an interesting illustration work that is quite subtle, and being subtle, doesn't lend itself to being photographed easily. Condition is excellent. There is an old sticker on glass at lower left corner with "13" written on it.

A very appealing small forest interior painting on board, 9" by 11" (12" by 14" in modern day gold framing), unsigned on front but on reverse in old hand is written (difficult to decipher) "near XXX farm Hampstead Heath/Oct. 3 1908 5 PM/P. In the style of noted and popular late 19th century/early 20th century pastel artist WILLIAM CHANDLER, this is a nicely executed work featuring purple grapes, a sectioned orange, a peach in the back, and some seeds and grape leaves. Measuring 10 3/4" by 14" (15 1/2" by 18 1/2" as framed), signed "MAYER" at lower right, I have been unable to match this up with a listed artist, but the work, dating to as late as 1930 or so, is very decorative and folky and in excellent condition, as is the frame.

Old watercolor drawing (perhaps charcoal in places as well) with slight use of white gouache, unsigned, the subject a younger man of the sixteenth century or thereabouts. The drawing (15 1/2" by 12") is on grayish heavy paper (the true color is indicated by the first two images---the subsequent ones were taken in different light, suggesting a more tan color). The photo on the left is a close-up of the Whistler butterfly signature with scorpion tail. The circular image is part of a parasol design. The photo on the right shows a close-up of Whistler's right hand holding a brush. Notice the reddish knuckles which indicates his health. Refer to Whistler portrait.

An interesting portrait miniature, by William Baldwin, of a nattily attired gent. The sitter, with a very rakish look about him, is set against a bright blue background, has long thick hair, a soul patch, and is wearing a stickpin with multi-colored jewels. These are motifs, along with the use of a strong blue background, that seem to appear in a number of his minis, as uncommon as they are. In all, a strong and amusing painting, and possibly conjuring up visions of a Mississippi River gambler.
