The work measures 11" by 12" and 15 1/2" by 16 1/2" in frame that may well be the original. The painting is signed faintly yet distinctly at lower left corner "S.S.C.", which is one of the known signatures of American artist SAMUEL SIMPSON CARR (1837-1908). Other known signatures include "S.S. CARR" and "S. CARR"...

DESCRIPTION: A delightful portrait of a girl in a hat by Gabrielle Denton, a well known New Mexico folk art painter from Las Cruces, NM. In this simplistic but expressive study, a girl with soulful blue eyes stares directly at the viewer while wearing a large yellow hat with flower. Original gouache, artist signed lower right, well matted and framed in copper-umber hues. DIMENSIONS: Actual painting is 12 ¾” x 12 ¾”. Frame dimensions are 26" x 26."

This, like many of his research notes, was an addendum to his book, The Life and Works of Haku Maki, which he published in 2007. He wrote an Appendix to the book called Chasing Maki. It is his story of buying prints and collecting images of Maki prints. This research note, written 10 years later, is about one of his chases, a chase that failed. Dan wrote: Please enjoy.

Despite numerous efforts I have been unable to decipher the signature though I suspect it to be by a listed or recognized artist. The drawing shows it was created by a talented hand, and the rich colors make for a most attractive landscape work...

A strong watercolor portrait, on natural material, of Mrs. James Pattenden (nee Weston) in a white dress with lace collar, gold necklace, hoop earrings, a brooch at the bodice, and a pearl comb in her upswept hair. Signed and dated 1817 on the reverse, and housed in a gold locket.

The condition of this work is excellent, with no issues at all. The newer locket is also without flaws. The case size is 3 1/8" by 2 1/2".
