This gifted artist was born in the Tyrolean Alps in 1911. He studied in Munich and Viena. Returning to his homeland, he specialized in painting portraits. His subjects were usually sun-browned peasants, depicted with brilliant realism and detail. He has exhibited and has received wide acclaim throughout Europe and the United States. Small oil on canvas laid on board painting of a desert, mid to late 20th century, 4 1/2" by 6 1/2" (11 1/2" by 10" framed), signed at lower right by California desert painter KENNETH WALFORD. This is a rather typical example of the work of this artist. I have handled a number of Walford's works. Most feature desert landscapes. Biographical information on the artist seems to be scarce at this time. The painting is lightly soiled, linen liner is stained at upper right.

It is mounted in its original stretcher and the canvas is glued to the stretcher. A replacement support has been added to the middle part of the canvas. This is a very rare untouched canvas and it has been repaired in 2 or 3 small areas with old canvas. It is very rare to find an untouched canvas...

Young Flute Player is the title of an oil painting by Benedetto Luti from the 1720’s, now in the Hermitage. An earlier version by Luti depicted a young boy in a blue jacket without any instrument. This engraving, made by Victor Marie Picot was published in London in 1780 as Boy and Lute, obviously mixing up the motif and the artist (!). Contributing to this is probably the Walpole family crest having been pushed in between the letters of the title...

Davis studied at the Art Students League in New York and became known for his etchings of idealized female figures. Many were used on the covers of Vanity Fair and Life magazines. Later in his career Davis exhibited in Europe and the United States including the Pennsylvania Academy and the Salmagundi Club.
