A very finished, beautifully executed pastel of a middle-aged lady, she nicely coiffed and elegant in appearance, the work signed at lower right "CARLES". I have researched the work, (including contacting an acknowledged expert on well-known Pennsylvania artist Arthur Carles Jr. 1882-1952) and she does not feel it has the characteristics to enable it to be called the work of that noted American painter. Pastel on paper drawing of a rocky coastline with sailing craft offshore, apparently unsigned, 9 1/4" by 23", (16 3/4" by 31" as framed), circa 1900. The style of the drawing is reminiscent of that of American artists like Alfred Thompson Bricher (1837-1908). The popular and common pastel art of William Chandler also comes to mind. The work needs a new mat and the old acidic wood backing is best replaced. Otherwise for its age this work is in excellent condition.

Lithograph on paper, 22 1/4" by 25 7/8" inside the mat (30" by 23" as framed), signed in pencil at lower right and numbered 47/180 at lower left, by important 20th century Spanish artist EMILIO GRAU-SALA (1911-1975). This is an apparently clean example (not examined out of frame) of the lithography of this major European artist, the paintings of whom command well into five figures at auctions in Europe and the USA...

Lithograph, 14" by 21" inside the mat, signed in the stone at lower right, from an unknown edition possibly of about 5,000 examples, the title "Ma de Proverbis", 1970. This is extremely clean and fresh with bright colors not having suffered any fading from light exposure. The piece is accompanied by a bright green mat and simple black metal frame of the period. Allow for reflections in glass.

An unusual offering: a print of some type, appearing as lithograph but not, perhaps a Heliogravure or similar, with HAND COLORING IN PASTEL, the oval-shaped card on which this is created measuring 20" by 16", the entire wood apparently original early oval frame measuring 26 1/2" by 23 1/2". Research indicates this is after a Renoir original work "Portrait of a Girl Wearing a Charlotte", circa 1900, now in the collection of the Musee d'Orsay in Paris...

This is a museum poster or flyer issued by the Long Beach Museum of Art in 1972, advertising an exhibition that year of the paintings of the important and still highly underrated Swiss-California modernist HANS GUSTAV BURKHARDT (1904-1994). The unframed sheet measures 24 1/4" by 18", and bears the complementary signature of the artist in blue ink at lower right just below the black area of the central image. Burkhardt was born in Switzerland and arrived in America in 1924...

A well-drawn pencil scene of the French coast of western Brittany, titled on reverse "Pecheurs a Douarnenez", signed at lower right by living French artist BRUNO DU TERTRE D'ELMARCQ. Douarnenez is one of the scenic towns much favored by artists since the 19th century. When I first saw this work I was reminded of the beach scenes of Eugene Boudin, the famed late 19th century French artist. The tiny figures, sails, and poetry all remind of that French master.
