Very rare hand carved Baroque Church Putto (Cherub), wood with traces of gilding and polychrome paint, made for corner/angle where 2 walls join. By the hand of one of the masters of 20th century Japanese printmaking is this woodblock on paper, 14 1/4" by 19" (21 1/2 by 25 3/4" framed), signed in pencil at lower right by the artist within the image area, and bearing inscriptions in Japanese in the margin at lower left and lower right. The image is a traditional temple garden in winter, a light snow covering the lanterns and roof, and apparently wilted flowers killed by the cold unable to lift their heads...

Utagawa Yoshitsuya, Japanese, 1822-1866, "Wakazaka Shinnai at Shizugadake". This is a an original color woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitsuya from his series '54 Battle Stories of Hideyoshi". The image size is 12 7/8 x 8 7/8 inches, 1864, lifetime impression, framed. Hideyoshi was a 16th century Samurai warrior in the who rose through the ranks of the army to become general, leading the forces of Japan in several brutal conflicts...

PAIR of gouache paintings of Italy, one apparently showing the island of Ischia in moonlight, at the entrance to the Gulf of Naples, the other a coastal scene of the mainland, neither signed, circa 1900. The Ischia work measures 6 1/2" by 9 3/4", the other 7" by 10 3/4" (12" by 14 3/4" and 12 1/2" by 16" framed----the frames slightly different). Such paintings were popular souvenirs that went home with Grand Tour visitors at the turn of the century...

Eugenia Grant's floral works in pastel are amazing achievements, often leading people to think they are prints. This is a glorious original work, 21" by 26 3/4", framed behind glass (33" by 39" framed), and signed at lower right. The realistic depiction of the pink roses, flowers, porcelain vessel, curtain backdrop, and reflection in table top, is very impressive indeed. I have seen a number of works by this highly underrated artist, and they always feature this impressive attention to detail...

A complex mixed media drawing, in the style of Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944), featuring geometric shapes and forms, measuring 7 1/2" by 11 3/4" inside the mat opening (17" in 21" in frame). The drawing is created with graphite, watercolor, gouache and perhaps pastel crayon. The detail is tight and finished. A very decorative work with color and form, sure to be a conversation piece.

I believe the type of painting might well be called "hard edge", there being sharp delineations between strips of color. This is a large and decorative work that will enhance any modern or mid century interior. The painting needs a simple cleaning, as over the years it has acquired some superficial brownish drips and soiling...
