In his book Daniel Tretiak says: “Maki’s kanji prints were normally of one main color against a white or black background. Poem 71-29 below is an exception—and all the more interesting because of it. In this print, Maki has created an abstract Person—the splashes of color show the head, eyes, shoulder, and two legs.” It measures 8.75in W X 12in H and is no. 73 of an edition of 152.

An important Canadian Group of 7 oil on panel by Francis Hans - Franz or Frank - Johnston OSA, ARCA (Canadian, 1888-1949) titled "Pools of Spring". Born in Toronto, he was a founding member of the renowned Toronto painters known as the Group of Seven, which he left by 1926. He became a principal of the Winnipeg School of Art and later the Ontario College of Art. He changed his signature to "Franz" in 1927 on the advice of a friend...

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Thomas Seir Cummings was born in England in 1804, and was taken to NYC as a child, where he remained until he retired in 1866. He died in NJ in 1894. Cummings became a student of Henry Inman in 1821 and after three years went into partnership with him, which lasted several years...

This dramatic Big Red—a name Daniel Tretiak attached to Haku Maki’s large red prints, usually of single Chinese characters (kanji) on black backgrounds—is a character meaning ordinary or commonplace. But Maki has done it in a stand-out way. It is 17.5in W x 24.5inH. NOTE: Dan Tretiak also referred to other large single-character ones of other colors as Big Yellow, Big Green, etc. See an interesting discussion of this between him and a friend at entry #1191431 below.

Contemporary Australian aboriginal art "dot" painting, acrylic on a thin canvas, signed on the reverse by artist POLLY PUNTJUNTA, and stamped with the Original Aboriginal Art Company stamp, of Adelaide, South Australia. The work measures 15" by 26 1/2" (23" by 34" in a wood frame with scratches). The past framer elected to place the reverse wire so as to hang this vertically, though I do not believe there is any particular reason to have done so. He was an etcher who relocated to California where he was an illustrator and etcher. He became a member of the California Arts Club, the California Society of Etchers and the Printmakers Society.

A finely worked sepia ink drawing of a Paris street scene, titled at top "Eglise et Seminaire St. Nicolas du Chardonnet", signed at lower right "Delaunay" and dated there 1867. The 6 1/2" by 7 1/2" drawing (11" by 13 1/4" as framed) features a Roman Catholic church in the fifth Arrondissement, on the south bank of the Seine, sometimes known as the Latin Quarter. The Pantheon and Sorbonne are located in this district, south of Notre Dame...

Gouache and watercolor on grayish tan paper, 7" by 9 1/2" inside the present mat (14 1/2" by 17" as framed), signed at lower left by listed French academy artist PIERRE FREDERIC LEHNERT (1811-?). This is a beautifully executed poetic drawing by an artist who showed at 19th century salons in Paris. From auction records it appears that studies of shepherds and sheep were a staple of the artist's production. Condition is excellent...

Original marble sculpture by Ruth Ingeborg Andris (Chicago, 1930-2014). 12" high including square wood base, 7" wide. Ruth Andris is known as a Chicago sculptor and artist. She studied at the AIC, at the Chicago Academy of Fine Art, and with sculptor Cosmo Campoli. Her works in stone and bronze were exhibited at the AIC, the Ceres Gallery in New York, the Peace Museum, the Benjamin Galleries, etc.

A peaceful scene of a quiet creek winding next to a forest, signed at lower right Emily M. Cornwall. An early century blue Philadelphia framer's label has been retained and affixed to the present backing. The 10" by 15 1/4" watercolor (18" by 23" framed) is offered in AS-IS condition. Somehow, over the years, the sky area in the left portion was severely damaged, with complete paper loss in areas especially at far left portion. The right half of the work is in good condition...
