In 1971 Haku Maki produced this large print, Poem 71-25. It was an edition of 100. This new arrival was produced in Tokyo and went ultimately to Florida in the US. It stayed there for a long time. In the course of its life there it was not treated nicely: It was folded in two places. The print had foxing, it had many ailments. Then it finally made it to my restorer. It had challenges there too: some liquid spilled on it, forcing a delay in the restoration process...

The watercolor is on paper which was long ago laid to a board. The work measures 10 1/4" by 15 1/2" inside the mat and 14 1/4" by 19 1/2" as framed. A rare etching of one of New York area's bridges, depicted in an interesting phase of its construction, pencil signed by American etcher artist RALPH PEARSON (1883-1958). The work measures 10 3/4" by 15 1/4" inside the mat and 17 1/2" by 21" as framed. The artist titled it at lower left "#69 Hell Gate Bridge" and inscribed it in pencil at lower margin "To Harold Swartz--Artist". (Harold Swartz appears to refer to the Los Angeles/New Mexico sculptor, born 1887, died 1948)...

John Henry Hill, American, 1839-1922, "Two Men in a Sailboat in a Rough Sea". This is an atmospheric marine etching by J. Henry Hill, after the painting by Otis Weber. The image measures 14 1/2 x 18 1/2 inches, published in 1886 by Klackner, New York, pencil signed on the lower right margin. Hill came from a family of artists and became a well known landscape and marine painter keeping with the pre-raphaelite tradition, influenced by John Ruskin and David Johnson.
