An unusual item...a portion of a birthday or other festive cake on a plate, make of some kind of ceramic material, hand painted very realistically and capable of "fool the eye" (trompe l'oeil), painted in colors reminiscent of the colors used by famous contemporary artist Wayne Thiebaud. Measurements are approximately 8 1/2" across the plate, by 8" in height. The artist has hand signed her name on the bottom of the plate, in black marker...
Oil on canvas painting of trees in a tawny dry landscape, 12" by 20" and 1" wide old wood frame, signed at lower left by artist S. J. TUJAGUE. At first I had difficulty reading the signature but some net research showed this to be by an artist apparently at least originally hailing from Louisiana, there being a number of pieces, some still life works, having been auctioned in New Orleans. A famous restaurant in that city goes by this name...
A PAIR of ink sketch drawings, one fully signed, the subject female nudes, executed in brown ink, measuring 10" by 6" (18" by 14" nicely framed in gold), the smaller work, (4 1/4" by 3 1/2", and 12" by 11" framed) a black ink sketch, signed with initials, of a standing woman in full-length dress with poofy sleeves. The artist is MARCEL-LENOIR (1872-1931), born with the name Jules Oury in Montauban, southwestern France...
A beautiful drawing, small but very accomplished, 5 1/8" by 7 1/8" (9 1/4" by 11 1/4" framed), signed somewhat illegibly at lower left, but fully identified in old ink on the reverse as "Palais de Justice Rue de la Place du Chatelet", the artist EMILE APPAY, 1922. Note the fine details of the Sphinx at right, lamp posts, kiosks, and people dressed in period clothing...

Ink drawing on heavy card, with a bit of black watercolor in the darker areas, the subject an adorable pug wearing a collar with "William Rifle" on it, and at lower right is written in longhand "Robert Glover Age 7 years"; and at lower left corner within the hand drawn border is the date, "94". I am not sure which one of these names be that of the artist, or if a name is actually that of the pug...
A late twentieth century abstract work meant to hang on the wall, the extreme dimensions 31" by 35", signed (incised) at left with what appears as (copyright symbol) and then "Bidenor" or "Ridenor" or even "Richards" or similar and dated there 1988, numbered 2 of 50 in Roman numerals. The "Memphis"-looking work is made of relatively heavy pressboard panels subsequently laminated with various surfaces, some dull/matte, one glossy like simulated marble, one like brushed aluminum or stainless steel...
A pencil drawing on paper, 5 1/4" by 7 3/4", (12 1/2" by 15" in modern frame), featuring studies of humped cattle lying down near an early wagon, unsigned, by the noted London-born artist GEORGE CHINNERY (1774-1852). Chinnery is known as the only western painter who was a resident of South Asia from the early to the mid 19th century, and a leading artist of the British community in India. After Royal Academy training he took at ship to Madras (Chennai) in 1802...
This is a truly antique work, an oil on canvas unframed painting, 24 1/2" by 30", relined in the mid 20th century, apparently unsigned, the subject elegant ladies in a formal, upper class interior setting, the piece likely English or Northern European, possibly but I think far less likely American...
Most would see this work as an etching or engraving and never give it a second look----but, it is, amazingly, an original ink on paper drawing (I guarantee that), measuring 23" by 16 3/4" (34 3/4" by 28 3/4" in dark old oak frame). Floating troubadours in their gondola serenade an upscale looking couple at right, as two other figures seem to be appreciating the pretty spring or summer day. The drawing is signed at lower right with what appears as "C J Meancon", the first letters conjoined...
Pen and ink on paper drawing of three nude women in an interior, 10 1/2" by 7 1/4" inside the mat (18" by 14" as framed), signed at lower right "Michonze" and dated there "58". This is a work of the talented, interesting artist GREGOIRE MICHONZE (known early in life as Michonznic). The artist has displayed his mastery of line as his flickering pen created a work that is possibly a study but which is complete in and of itself...
Watercolor on paper, 9 1/2" by 13 3/4" (16 1/2" by 20 1/2" as framed), the subject a 19th century shipwreck engulfed by waves on what appears to be an Atlantic ocean beach, some tiny sails visible on the distant horizon. The artist painted in New England and specifically on Nantucket so this could well be coastal New England. The watercolor is signed at lower left by the listed Ohio and Pennsylvania artist RUFUS WAY SMITH (1840-1900)...
PAIR of unframed, unstretched oil on canvas paintings, the larger 20" by 24", the smaller one 17 1/4" by 22", both signed at lower right "Allen H. Newton" and bearing inscriptions on the reverse showing the locations in Andover, Connecticut (east of Hartford, between there and Willimantic in the northeastern part of the state). Both paintings are in need of restoration, since they've been carelessly handled by past owners, including, probably, rolling...
An oil on canvas painting of the symmetrical snow-capped cone of Mt. Fujiyama in Japan, hardy palms in the foreground, signed at lower right by Japanese artist "T. Arashi" (signed in English and Japanese characters), no date, circa 1980. The artist was very talented and has created a beautiful and arresting composition. The mystical, famous mountain stands in all its glory above the surrounding landscape. Condition is excellent. I have not been able to locate information on the artist. Meas...
An etching on paper, measuring 14 1/2" by 10 1/4" inside the mat (21 1/2" by 16 1/2" as framed), signed in pencil at lower left margin and numbered 29/150 at lower right margin, with a dedication (in the plate) at upper left and date 5 November 1906, by the noted German Jewish artist HERMANN STRUCK (1876-1944). The subject is a bearded man wearing a yarmulke. Struck was born in Berlin of Orthodox Jewish parentage. Early in his life he met the Zionist leader Theodor Herzl (1860-1904), a meeting...
Very fine Indian miniature painting on marble panel, depicting the royal court with the King on the Throne, close attention to details, use of vibrant gilt colors. The common and typical miniature paintings of this kind includes painting on ivory or paper or wood and this is my first experience involving use of marble in such painting. Size: Panel measures 6"H x 4"W.
Condition Report: This item is in good condition and due to use of thin plastic cover, for better protection, the photos are refl...
