Watercolor on paper painting of a classic stone castle with figures outside its portals, 14" by 10 1/2" (26 1/2" by 23" as framed), apparently unsigned. This is a circa 1850 work which has survived in presentable condition. There is foxing in the sky principally, as shown, but no large stains. To be sure, there were a lot of anonymous skilled watercolor artists in the British Isles in the 19th century, though this might well have been created by an artist that would be "listed" today.

A large watercolor painting, apparently unsigned, 20 1/2" by 28 1/2" (52 cm. by 72 cm.) and 27 1/2" by 36" framed. The antique work has been laid on a thin card, earlier in the 20th century, so if there was information on the recto it is hidden. The fascinating scene contains at least 20 figures going about their business, two horses, numerous boats, and windmills in the distance, and carefully rendered architectural facades. A most unusual and interesting DOUBLE-SIDED pencil drawing on wove paper, one side featuring an indian in headdress snatching a child off the shore, a tiny fenced white settlement visible in the upper left corner; the other side features a white man in frontier clothing holding his rifle as a native brave swings his tomahawk. Both sides are signed "E Thompson artist". I am not aware of a known artist by this name so this will rest squarely in the folk art or historical categories...

Etching on delicate Japan paper, 13 3/4" by 10 1/2" inside the mat (20" by 15 1/2" framed) signed in the plate at lower right by the important 19th century French etcher, CHARLES MERYON (1821-1868). The (likely) east coast scene measures 9" by 19 3/4" inside the mat and 14 1/2" by 25 1/2" as framed. I did open up the backing to peer inside, in search of a signature, but a signature was not found. The paper was evidently mounted on a board in the nineteenth century, as that board has the old telltale down-the-middle line where the two old wood boards would have met...
